Title: Anyone recognize these pipes?
Post by: azcycle on July 28, 2010, 05:15:16 PM
Exhaust pipes on my r65 are very obviously not stock, and I am embarrassed to admit it, but are also obnoxiously loud. Like almost Harley straight-pipe loud. My FIL loved his loud pipes and I do feel slightly like I'm "betraying" him a bit by wanting to change them.... so what I thought I'd do is see if I could find some baffle inserts to keep the look my FIL liked but reduce the decibels a bit.

So does anyone recognize what kind of pipes these are? Might give me a starting point to find some baffle inserts.

I do have the original mufflers but I'm not sure they'll work anymore. One side has a pretty good "tear" in the metal where it mounts to the can.  Plus, I think my FIL modified the header pipes so the aftermarket mufflers would fit. Putting it back to stock might require me to purchase new header pipes, etc. Not a route I want to head right now...

Any help is appreciated.

Good luck?

You might have to cut them open and weld them shut...

Graeme,  What did FIL do to the header pipes that leads you to believe they would no longer work with stock-ish mufflers?

I'm betting he cut of the rear, where they angle upward.

Yeah, I've Google'd baffles and mufflers but the results are so generic that I thought if I could find someone that recognized the pipes, it would give me a better starting point.  Welding isn't going to happen... last time I welded was 7th grade shop class.  ;D

This.  Looks to me like he cut the stock header pipes at the front clamp and welded another straight piece on the end. Then clamped the aftermarket muffler to that.  Another downside of this is with the elongated straight pipe, the center stand doesn't tuck up as high as it should, so I scrape it when I go over a high speed bump/curbs.

Those silencers look to be of a generic type I've seen available at a lot of Britt Bike "stockists" often referred to as a Rigid style.

Got $50?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-Exhaust-Header-Pipes-R45-R65-/220644023603?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item335f689d33

I have a pair of OEM mufflers (my originals) that you could have for the price of shipping.
They are still quiet, and could hold up for a long time.

I was watching those on ebay, and your generous offer has me convinced.  PM me the cost of shipping, Rob.... and how you'd like to receive payment.

Thanks!

Can anyone measure the top height of the the stock mufflers for me as they're mounted on the bike?  I don't *think* the stock mufflers will interfere with the custom sidebags on my r65 but I want to make sure the tops of the mufflers don't hit the bottom of the bags.

I will have to find boxes for them.

Also, be aware that there are some cracks where the mounts fasten.   I'm sure they could be welded easily, and they are in a location where they wouldn't show.

And I'll have to check to see if I have the mounts.  They are two pieces of angled steel.  I'm not sure, but the slightly used OEM mufflers I bought on eBay may not have come with them, and I used them.

Regardless, I will examine everything and get back to you.  A breaker house could get you the brackets easily enough for cheap.

But they are otherwise solid and quiet.

Hey Rob.... thanks but I was out-bid on the pipes and can't afford to get "new" ones at $130/side.

Hold off on everything... don't bother digging/boxing, etc.

I DO have my original exhaust mufflers, and they seem to be in the same shape as yours... with only slight cracking where the mounts fasten. I'd hate to have you send everything over only to be exactly same as what I have now.  I'll double check the condition of mine and take pics.

But without stock pipes, it's all moot anyway.  But a BIG thank you for the offer.... will let you know. ;D

Resurrecting this old thread in case anyone is curious. After not hearing the r65 for well over a year, I forgot how loud the sucker is!  As mentioned above, I could find a set of used original mufflers but I'd have to buy the whole exhaust system.

Did a bit of quick research and I guess the "Google Gods" were looking kindly upon me today. Turns out that the mufflers my FIL put on the r65 look to be EMGO Harley "classic style" repros.  So with that information in-hand, I can purchase some EMGO slip-in internal baffles.
