Hi ALL
I thought you'd be interested in the advice I received from Avon Tyres re my dilema as to FRONT tyre being 90/90 OR 100/90
With regards to your email enquiry, Avon Tyres recommendation for the BMW R65 is a 90/90-18 51V AM26 Roadrider Universal front and a 120/90-18 56VAM26 Roadrider rear, running at 27psi front and 36 psi rear.
With regards to the fitment of a 100/90-18 on the front wheel we are unable to approve this as the 100/90 is designed to be fitted to a 2.50 rim width but is acceptable on anything from 2.15 to 2.75, there for it is too large a fitment for a 1.85 rim width and would be pulled in to fit the rim which would distort the profile shape of the tread giving either a smaller contact patch or at best the same size as the 90/90.
The 90/90-18 51V AM26 Roadrider Universal is an acceptable fit with the 120/90-18 Roadrunner, however, the ultimate performance of the Roadrider will not obviously be achieved until such times as they are fitted both front and rear.

The last Metzeler 100/90 tire I had mounted on my '81 R65, I was told by the person installing the tire, that it was too big for the rim, I was told that the next frnt tire I get, should be the 90/90 .
Thats the first time I had been told this and I've replaced at least 6 sets of tire so far on the bike .

Therein lies one of the few technical differences between the R65 and the R65LS. The LS has a 2.15" wide front rim and can fit a 100-90 tyre as opposed to the base models 1.85" front rim.
