I've had the Bean Can apart on a 1980 I had and don't remember any problem with disassembly. I have this one apart to clean the springs and make sure every thing in there is "all happy".
I can't seem to get the inner plate to come out. The two side screws are out and it seems like it should come outta there. I've fiddled and fussed trying to lever it out, but no luck.
Am I missing the forest because of the trees? I wanted to ask before I got a "bigger hammer"

It's been a long time since I had a points can apart, too.
I do remember it being a struggle.
I think it is just a VERY tight fit, and requires a strong pry bar.
I COULD BE WRONG!!!
-
Rob... YOU were right
Bigger hammer did the trick! it was just tight. I was able to get at it from the inspection hole and smack the dog XXXX out of it and got it to move.
Once it moved I owned it.

My 79 was a struggle too. Had to rotate the plate to line up gaps with crimp marks on the case.
Was your case crimped ?
-
I didn't see any crimp marks on the case.
It wasn't much better going back together. I aligned it and had to drive it in with a punch and a hammer.( just like it came out) Then I levered those little tangs that the screws go into until they aligned
The advance mechanism will be the "LAST" thing I check the next time I have a high idle condition. LOL

Mine was definitely crimped very neatly by the factory at if I remember 3 points around the case so that it was impossible to remove without first been rotated. They must have used some purpose made hydraulic rig. The plate went back in a whole lot easier than it came out after I carefully took a few thou off it's dimensions.

Guess who else learned that the hard way ?
