Title: De-greasing
Post by: Ron_S. on November 01, 2011, 09:31:16 AM
After the great advice I got about charging my battery, I have another of the many questions to come.  How do I de-grease/oil my motorcycle.  I'm told, and most automotive de-greasers warn, not to use them on motorcycles.  I'm told this is because the products will discolor the engine.  ??????

I've been using 'Gunk' degreasing products on my R65 since I've had it .

If you get it on painted surfaces, it will spot up a bit, a good washing and wax afterwards gets rid of it .

It also works best on a warm, not hot engine .

What this about oil and grease on a BMW engines - are you telling me they leak.  ::)

Ok I get a bit of misting from the push rod tubes. I use a spray foam alloy wheel cleaner before washing the bike. Works fine as long as the oily dirt is not allowed to build up too much.

If I have serious staining (dark areas) I will go after it with Eagle 1 Mag Wheel Cleaner for unpainted rims as it is acidic and does a good job bleaching out the dark spots.  Do not let it dry before scrubbing/rinsing!  I usually go over any greasy/oily areas with a brush and full-strength Greased Lightning - it's a helluva good high alkaline cleaner.

Thanks again, Gentlemen.

Barry, did I imply leakage?  Heaven forbid.  I, too, get the misting from the push-rod tubes, but it just keeps my boot properly conditioned.  I just failed to mention how clumsy I am-spillage happens.
