Title: nk I may be starting High preformance coil for R65
Post by: Hunsta on March 21, 2010, 04:31:04 AM
Gday all
i think Im starting to have an issue with my coill, and I was wondering if theres a good aftermarket High prformance coil available. If anyone could suggest one, where they can be sourced and a price(I know it may be in $US, but sometimes its cheaper to import) that would be great. I guess I would prefer one that would bolt straight on as well.
 Cheers
Craig

Craig,

I bought a Dyna Coil from Rick at Motorrad Electrik (http://www.motoelekt.com/menu.html). I was happy with the price and performance. And Rick included a bracket to mount the coil. It was cheaper than the BMW coil.

All the best,
Paul

Dyna coils do seem to be the favourites. If you have points you need something with primary resistance in the range 2.4 to 3 ohms or if electronic ignition use the same value as your original coil.

I've seen on other forums, that a K100 dual output coil would work quite well as a substitute for airhead bikes with electronic ignition systems .

Don't know if you any motorcycle salvage businesses in your region that you may be able to get one of these, for substantially less cost, but you would need to fabricate an adapter bracket .

I have a Dyna 'brown' coil, quite satisfied with it .

The business that I got it from, Motorrad Elektrik, the owner Rick Jones has said that in the time he has been selling them, he's only had one or two returned, that had actually failed, average expected service life is 20+ years .

What sort of problem are you having with the coil ?

Yo, Hunsta   Have you closely examined your existing coil? Remove it from the bike so you can wipe in clean; then check for tiny, hairline cracks in the plastic case. If you have the original BMW black/gray Crack-O-Matic... it's the coil. What year R65? Points or electronic?

Dyna coils available for both systems. I have them on both my R65s. Note the circular pattern of cracks in the 81's OEM "Cracker.

Have you tried BM Workshop in Brisbane? They used to sell a replacement coil kit which I think is based on a Kawasaki coil. I have been running mine for 15 or 18 years with no trouble whatsoever and it bolted straight on to the bike.

Thanks all I`ll give Motoradd Electrik a buzz tomorrow and see what I can get. By the sounds of it the Dyna seems to popular choice. I`ll also give the BM shop in Brissy a bell and check out the kwaka one, however they do have a tendancy to charge like a wounded bull.

OK got onto rick and being a 1985 R65 i`ll need the Dyna Brown 1.5ohm. $125 posted to Oz. is that about how much it cost you?

Well it started with the right hand pot not firing the other day. When I pulled the plug lead out of the coil there was some sort of corroded metal just sitting in there. I took that out and put the lead straigh into the pin inside, and she fired up nicely. Went for a ride the next day, and although it preformed ok there were a couple of moments when the bike stuttered and backfired. To me that meant the spark was becoming erratic on that lead.
If it isnt the coil I`d like to just change it anyway.
 Cheers
Craig

Sounds like you need new leads with your new coil!

I did give the leads a really good checking over when I had the trouble, and with the naked eye, didnt see any cracks or open sections on then. That however is not to say that the inner piliment is not suspect.I`ll be changing them anyway I guess.

...I`ll be changing them anyway I guess.

And a fresh pair of the correct NGK resistor spark plug caps will top it off nicely.   Monte

I just checked my leads with a multimeter and discovered one of my NGK plug caps was 'dead'. I swapped it for a spare and now they both read 4.6 k ohms.

Ok Now Im relatively new to electrics diagnosis, but I bought a multi meter a little while ago and have started to use it to fault find a few things and have been amazed at how easy it was. So how do I go about checking my leads?

The lead I descibed as dead was working but the bike had a low revs miss when warmed up, today it still has the same symptoms with the replacement cap.
I checked the resistance with the ohms setting on my multimeter, I just changed the range until I got a result that seemed right.
I'm sure someone will point us in the direction of some more technical answers.

Ahoy, just resurrecting an old thread.

Today i was rather excited to put some lairy banana-yellow HT leads on my R65LS. Alas I find the plugs don't fit my coil.

On closer inspection I have a Kawasaki unit, ZC006-TR12V. Seems to go well.

hello Hunsta
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Motorcycle-Parts-/14841/i.html

I have similar problems with my 83 R65 L S  Bob Valdez  kindly directed me to Rick. He will forward me a coil plus clamp for $125 including shipping bcosts to Ireland. I attach link for ebay.uk where there are 4 brown Dyna coils _ leads for sale. One would suffice  whereas it is a bit expensive purchasing 4  for 1
