Title: Marks on my header pipes
Post by: Olliepup on October 05, 2011, 06:26:40 PM
I'm maybe the fourth owner of this 1986 R65 mono and noticed some odd marks on both header pipes. It appears that something was clamped to them. It looks likes two bands, 3/8" wide, one about 1/2" from the finned nut and another just above the crossover pipe. Highway pegs, maybe? Probably not a shield (too far from one's feet) or a protection thing (attached to the pipe wouldn't give bending protection).
So...any thoughts?
Dave

At one time, there were some chrome "vented" heat shields offered. I've seen repops, IIRC, offered on the Bob's BMW site. Just a guess on my part.

On my bike when it bought it. .  Held on with small "hose" clamps.  When the chrome began to rust,  I painted them flat black with gas grill paint.  Looks better than the heat discolored pipe itself, I suppose.  They don't go far enough back to prevent burnt rubber marks from your shoes hitting the pipes.
