does anyone know about a new ignition coil and switch? for a 1982 R65. mine is cracked but no problems detected with it yet, i'm told there is a new type/style that requires a switch or something?

There's a misconception about when you upgrade from the old gray plastic body (crack-o-matic coil) to the new red plastic body OEM coil . It is widely rumored that you need to replace the ignition control unit, when you upgrade to the new coil. My personal experience is, I replaced my original coil with the upgraded model in June 1994, I didn't replace the ignition control unit then, I replaced the upgraded coil last November with a Dyna (brown coil). I have not had a problem with the ignition unit so far. I think that I operate my R65 in one of the more severe environments available, the desert heat of Phoenix should have brought out a problem by now ( 14 years) if this rumor was true.

Okay, I have been looking on the web for the Dyna brown coil (DC2-1), looks like you need to buy them as a set, price is from 130 from MPS Racing to 155 directly from Dynatek. Any idea how/where these actually fit and how they will connect. The photo just makes it more confusing.

The Dyna 'brown' coil is a dual output coil, so you only need one, unless your bike has dual sparkplugs on each cylinder. Motorrad Elektrik has the coil and mounting bracket for $80, plus $6 for priority shipping. I have done business with Rick Jones (owner) for about 10 years, and he stands behind all the products he sells. As usual no affiliation with said company.

I'll stand behind Bob, Iffin' it's gonna get toasted it will here in the Valley of the Sunstroke! My bike was retrofitted at some point with the 2 separate Bosch can coils (not the blue ones) these seem to be made of indistructo 10. My only problem with these is that I lost the front coil bracket between Barstow and Bakersfield but a piece of genuine roadside wire had all fastened again. Just another option to the crack-o-matic and the dyna brown.

I am running a second-hand dual output BMW K100 coil in place of the two Bosch Blues that were on on my early (1979) R65 when i bought it. I too, lost the brackets (fatigue), and one of the coil mounts on the frame. It would seem that the Bosch coils, which are heavier than the originals, where at fault.
I have had no issues but the new coil has only been on for a year or two.
