Rich, doesn't look like there's anything wrong with that filter, as I have one installed on my bike that looks exactly the same !

I don't know if it is defect or not, but the filter that I have on my bike now - which
is the same basic shape, has both ends that are straight and coaxial with the
centerline of the filter, not pointing off at odd angles.   As long as it doesn't leak
and the flow rate is sufficient to not cause starvation, it is probably OK.

Hey what is the part number on the metal filter in that picture?  NAPA?  Autozone?  Or the application.

Thanks,

I don't have the part number, but that is the exact filter I have on my bike. I went to Checker Auto Parts and just chose the one on display that looked like it would fit best - they are all on display in blister packs. Works great!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

The only thing I can see that looks a little strange is that your carb is waaay too clean.  Do you ever put gas in it?  ;)  Other than that, I'm not really sure what you are trolling for...

I'm with Justin.  And your push rod seals don't seem to leak.  I think we should swap bikes until mine looks like that, then swap back.

Distinguished photo analyists,
While admiring the the distinct beauty of the r65 my critical eye saw something that looked amiss. Sure as shootin' I found that my sexy clear, sintered bronze filter had gone all melty at some point. I'm a bit timid about parts that carry fuel getting all Gumby like. Now Bob I fully expect yours to look the same, think it's due to our warm weather. I'm not comfortable with this as my brother in law was severely burned by a motorcycle fire some years ago. I ran right out and pulled a universal replacement of metal from the shelf of my local AutoZone. If you have one of these you may want to have a peek. The replacement was made by champion Laboratories. www.luberfiner.com but I think just about any auto parts place has a similar item.
Oh. I wipe off the carbs with a bit of Never Dull from time to time, "just a pinch between the cheek and gum" [smiley=naughty.gif]

Rich, you havn't seen a fuel leak on a BMW, until you have an oilhead, and have the quick disconnect  fuel line from the fuel pump break, and soak you in 4+ gallons of fuel on a 108 degree day in Friday evening rush hour traffic on I-10 !

My filters have never melted, because in 27 years, I have never had one on my bike!

The filter housing hasn't melted, it's just succumbed to a little pressure from the fuel line, and add a liberal dose of desert heat for about 6 months out of the year. And did you notice the subtle desert brown patina that the filter has acquired?

I bet the quickly evaporating fuel cooled you down even faster than water would have.  Or did I miss the point?   :-/
