Title: Modifying Krauser racks for R65?
Post by: meterbridge on June 04, 2007, 09:51:02 PM
Everything I've read says that Krauser racks for other BMWs don't work on the R65. However, non-R65 racks seem in greater abundance. Anyone have any success with/tips on modifying such a rack to work? Is it even possible? Just acquired a set of vintage panniers, and want to be able to use them sooner than later for the summer. Any guidance much appreciated.

Cheers,

meterbridge

I don't have experience with the Krauser racks, but the BMW racks for the R65/R45s I think differs
from the rack for the big bikes (as far as the pre-85, dual shock frames go) in the area of the  "arm" that
extends down toward the rear footpegs and bolts on down there.  The length of the arm and orientation
of that end are different for the smaller frames, I believe.  Don't have a set of each handy to compare, though....

The lower "arm" is shorter and has a sharper bend in it.  It also bolts onto the top of the passenger peg/exhaust mounting plate where the bigger ones bolt into the side.  I would expect somebody could get the bigger ones to fit if they had a moderate amount of mechanical aptitude, some tools, and patience.

If I'm not too lazy tomorrow maybe I'll lay out one of each and snap a comparo pic.  Don't hold your breath, though, as I've been awfully lazy lately...

+1 on nhmaf.  That is how I remember it.

You could get a pair and try it, but it might take a few weeks of work to make it happen.

Much appreciated, folks. I'd certainly like to see comparo pics. I have a certain level of machine shop experience, and a pretty good selection of tools. If things look not too bad, I might be tempted to give it a shot. If anyone has actual experience doing this kind of thing, that would be even better.

Cheers.

Hi!

I have bought used Krauser for my R45 (dual shock frame). Rack was before mounted  on several Japanese bikes, so I modified two of the brackets...

I will take photos tomorrow

Gee I'm really annoyed my Mono is so much like the other normal Beemers. I don't have the pleasure of trying to find odd parts to fit the thing like you guys. It's all too easy sometimes, no challenge!!  ;D

Bill......................;-)

I sure do like your windshield, ciciban.  Do you know where it was made?
