dang, more problems for me. i went to sinc the carbs and found the the right side was not working. i worked through and found i was missing spark, had a wire wrong and then i had spark. still wasnt running on both cyliders. so i switched plug, coils and still wasnt running on the right cylinder?? i was going to check the valve settings and timing, i went to go put it in 4th or 5th like the book said when i found i dont have 4th! dang, dang, dang.
i will have to figure out what is going on with the right side, i have spark, i have fuel air mix, have to check compression. i will then removed the tranny and pull the cover and take a look what i have going on in there. well i will be able to say i had my hands in everypart of this bike.

Jon, if I'm not mistaken, it's not as easy as taking the cover off of the trans. You have to break the nut that secures the output flange, and then use a puller to remove it, I guess it's not as easy as it sounds without specialty tooling. Hopefully someone with a little more knowledge will add a bit more insight into the job.

at least i think i am missing the gear, when it is in that gear i turn the rear tire and it makes a clicking sound like it is not all the way in gear or not making contact?? tools, i can always buy tools. some people do drugs, i do tools. even if i never use it again i'll get what ever it takes.

i just pulled the tranny out, fairly easy, i had did the spline lube before so i had a good idea how it came out. other than trying to get the tranny out, no it doesnt fit out the right side, after getting it out the left side and looking back in the book it did say to remove from the left :).
so i spent a hour with my german mistress i am now going to take my miss out to diner for putting up with all the time and effort i do spend on the mistress. so i will crack the case tomorrow and take a look see inside.

Jon, with your description, I'm not so sure that you have a transmission problem. I just had my trans overhauled, engine hasn't been started since I have carbs off, and I can't get mine into gear. I think you need to get the transmission rotating from the engine at idle, then try to get it in gear.

Well, I don't think that the input has to be spun by the engine, but like sometimes with the
transmission in the bike, the input shaft and/or output shaft has to turn a bit to allow the
dogs to engage in changing from one gear to the next. If slightly misaligned, they'll never
mesh without a bit of a shift in tooth positions.
The general rule of thumb when rebuilding a transmission is to not put it back into the
bike unless one can shift through all the gears. I've always assumed that a bit of
turning of the input and/or output shaft may be required as part of this.

so i may not be missing the gear? i thought ou should be able to get it into any gear when it is on the stand not running?
i still have to figure why my right cylinder is not working as it should. going to torque everything in the morning then check the compression, then timing?

Jon, I would check valve clearances on your right side. If you were playing with the wiring you might want to double check everything again too.
Agree with the others on tranny. Sometimes you have to rock the wheel around to get it to switch to next gear if engine isn't running.

well when i had everything apart for the tranny it was easy to check the valve lash, my right side was tight. the left side wasnt so bad but it to was off. i did both and put the trans back in this morning. tried to start it but i wore the battery down so i am waiting on the charger.

Wow, Jon, I haven't been keeping up. Sorry for all your trouble.
What you had experienced sounds like a 'false neutral'. I get them all the time on my upshift from 1st to 2nd, especially if there are onlookers... Well, not all the time. I don't get in a hurry that often.
Anyway...I am glad you put that box back in there.
