Title: LS Fuel Cap - DISMANTLE
Post by: aNDY on May 02, 2011, 01:42:26 AM
the cap on the LS that I"m restoring is in the "locked" position, thankfully off the tank.
Turning the key does nothing to help.?

I need to dismantle the cap and Locking Cylinder from the threaded base of the cap.

please tell me how to do this

cheers,

aNDY  :-)

Easy, just snap the threaded metal part off the black alloy top. Push it sideways, it is a press fit.
I have previously posted how to 'fix' these caps along with photos of them pulled apart. Try searching my posts.
You will find a black plastic spring loaded 'key' in there that should engage with a slot. The spring wears or breaks and the key no longer holds. I replaced the key with a screw so that the head engages the slot. My cap is no longer lockable but I can always get it off.

Are you the same Andy that recently registered on the Coppermine photo gallery?

If so, let me know in a PM so I can activate your profile.

Check out Snowbum - he's got a big write-up with pix and everything. There are several iterations of this cap, and he goes into them all. Just google snowbum bmw and you'll get there.

All the other 'fixes' I have seen described including Snowbums involve drilling holes through the top of the cap. My fix works for the later of the 2 types of cap (same as Andy's photo) and doesn't involve any external holes or visible screws.
