Title: Tappet clearance
Post by: tvrla on April 02, 2011, 11:17:46 AM
While helping a friend adjust his valves, he pulled out the small owners manual which listed clearance at .002" and .008".

I'd never seen that before and as far as I knew, all beemers were set at .004 and .008. We set them at .004, but now I'm wondering.

I've done a little searching and can't find anywhere else that lists the intakes at .002".

What's going on here? Any of you have more data?

That was the recommended clearance value from BMW back when the bikes first came out .

I think  most owners set the intake to .004 in these days .

BMW recommended valve clearance changed a few times when the bikes were new. This is the history as far as I have seen in print. The service bulletin superseded the original owners manual when clearances were found to be closing up.

78 - 80 owners manual   inlet .004"    Ex .006"

81 -      owners manual   inlet  .002"    Ex .008"

Mar 82 Service bulletin   inlet .004"    Ex .008"

Thanks! That's exactly what I needed.
