Title: Sidestand / Frame Failure
Post by: Bob_Roller on March 26, 2011, 07:37:46 PM
Yesterday, I moved the oilhead and the '81 R65 around, so I could take the R65 to work today .

Bike seemed to be leaning a bit more than usual yesterday .

When I got home today, needed to get my Honda Civic out for a few essential weekend necessities (read: beer run), put the R65 on the side stand and noticed the left cylinder was a lot closer to the ground than it should be .

Got the bike on the center stand and found the countersunk screw that holds the side stand on, had backed out and had put a dent in the left header pipe .

On further inspection, I found the cast part of the frame the side stand bolts to cracked at the front and separated .

Looks like I need a bit of welding done !!!!!!!!

I'll TIG weld it for ya, but you will have to ride 1300 miles!

I was just looking at mine Bob. That's a very substantial casting that is also the front engine mount.  On mine there is only a longitudinal weld presumably on both sides of the tube although I can only see the outside weld and it looks fine. I think it's normal practice not to weld across a frame tube as this could lead to a stress fracture. Where exactly has your weld failed ?

You have to remember, Barry, that the early 249s and the later ones were significantly different - I think.

Sorry I can't post any pictures, but the casting on my '81, is a lot different from what you describe on your bike .

This part has a loop look to it, and it cracked at the thinnest part at the front of the casting, probably at best 6 mm square .
