Title: Freakin' Batteries!!!
Post by: Justin B. on March 17, 2011, 02:20:37 PM
Wuz going to limber up the Junkyard Dawg today as it's supposed to be in the 80s for the next few days.  Drag it out of the garage, put on the fuel, choke, turn the key on, I have lights, CLACK, and no action!  >:(

Put the charger on it for a few hours and same thing.  Put the bigger charger on, set at 10 amp, wait for about 15 minutes, set charger to "Start Boost" and it fired right up!   :)  Run it for a few minutes, turn off, try to start, CLACK!

I have decided the battery has gave up the ghost after a bit under 4 years so I get on Staab Battery's site and order a UB12220 to replace it with.  I had put one of these in the R65RS a few years ago before letting it go live with Suraklyn and as far as I know it's still good.  The battery had gone up a bit to $59.03/shipped UPS but still less than half that of an Odyssey.  The UB12220 is a 12V 22 AH AGM battery

I am not endorsing this as last time I endorsed a battery a fwe got mad when it didn't fit their battery box but for this price I can be tempted to do some modding, if necessary, to make it fit!

All usual disclaimers apply...

Oh, I had a tracking number around an hour after I placed my order!  I have contacted their sales department to try to get us a "forum discount" but even if we don't get one $45 + shipping ain't too shabby for a 22AH AGM battery!

I've got three of them right now, the oldest is coming up on 2 years now, it's been in the oilhead for 15 months .

No problems so farand I do keep a battery tender on them when the bikes are not being ridden .

Yoy won't need to alter the battery box, unless you have an older 1000 cc BMW bike, that had the larger size battery, it fits the oilhead battery box no problem .

I put one in the R65RS and just ordered the one for the Dawg.  On the '81 R100 I have an Odyssey and I modified an R65 battery box and installed it into the R100 to make battery choices better.

I wonder if it will make a good replacement for the 1150RT when the time comes?  guess I need to get some dimensions for the stocker...
