Title: Engine mounts question
Post by: VaSteve on March 13, 2011, 07:58:31 PM
This is probably the only thing I didn't take very good photos of.

I am reinstalling the engine into the frame and I have the following parts (aside from the nuts and double threaded pins):

2 wide washer/spacers
4 medium washer spacers
4 wave washers

Per the photos, It seems that at least one of the thick washers was on the right side in the rear.  But I cannot fit the other in the rear without pounding it in.  On the left side there was one of the medium washers on the outside of the frame.

The rest is a mystery.  Is there an order this is supposed to be in?  It was so grease covered when I took it apart, I assumed this was all the same.

Thanks!

Some photos might help.   I got the rear in OK, used both the large washers.  But the front, there's something wrong.   First two photos are how it went back together.   Last is the only photo I have of that area before I took it apart.  Something is missing, but I can't figure out what.  I don't think it should have that much space.   I can't figure this out from the fisches.

I'm sorry Steve - I can't be much help here.  All 4 of mine are the same thickness.
I have them all on the inside.

Hmmm, maybe I lost them during the dis assembly....but that's not usually how I do things.   :-[

Steve,

I think you have two extra washers (spacers).  Try using the 4 medium spacers you mention on both front and rear pins.  You should only have 4 spacers - all should fit in-between the frame and engine housing.  If I remember correctly for my 81 R65 the fronts were the same thickness, and the rears were the same thickness. Is there a way you can measure the opening of the front and rear frame mounting bosses and the width of the front and rear outer faces of the engine case, then do the math?  Maybe with a long flat ruler or yard stick?

The fische for an 80 R65 calls for 4 spacers (#10) of the same part number which I would assume are the same thickness.  ???

I tried to get pictures of mine this evening - my 1982 R65LS appears to have (1) spacer at each of the (4) locations - though things are embarrassingly dirty under there right now and I didn't have room to move around much..  I posted pics of what I could see in my parts album here:

Hi Steve, this is what you should have on the front and back engine mount bolt;
a 6mm thick x 22mm outside diameter spacer (washer) between engine and frame,
and a thin washer under the nut (and over the header pipe bracket on the rear bolt).

I have the above standard setup on my rear mount.

On the front mount I have a 'Luftmeister' type anti-vibration dampener kit.
You remove the FRONT 6mm spacers and replace them with 2 thin washers with a rubber dampener in-between.
The dampener is from a David Brown Cone Ring Coupler, part number 0860 1906 (in rubber) or 0037 6006 (urethane). I have the rubber ones, I originally put them in about 20 years ago and have only replaced the rubber ring once, that's how I know the number and where they come from.
Note: the coupler is not from David Brown Tractors, you need to get them from a transmission or engineering supply shop.

The rear mount should be torqued to 65 lb-ft. and the front nuts need to be locktited into place and torqued to 10 - 12 lb-ft.

The engine basically holds the frame tubes in place, if the 6mm spacers are tight to install just prise the frame tube further away from the frame, slip them in and torque it all up again.

Cheers Bruce

That's a good bit of info Bruce. I've managed to track down the coupler on the David Brown Gear systems website. Just need to find a uk supplier.

In Australia they are available from 'Blackwoods'. They have numerous branches in all states and territories.

Barry, try searching for an engineering and power transmission supplier.
