Title: 81 R65 will be mine 6/1/07 (bank not open today)
Post by: tagordon on May 28, 2007, 02:51:36 PM
Will pick up Tues after work. Stored outside two years. Started & riden 50 miles then stored this winter. Again outside. Having never worked on Airheads am hoping to lower the learning curve here. Has a little less that 50k miles on odometer. Looks suprisingly good for its age. IMHO.

I noticed during inspection before purchase:
1. Brake master cylinder sticky. Brakes work but no engaging till very late on lever pull.
This seemed to get better after filling with fresh fluid & bleeding.
2. Carbs gunked up. PO removed, cleaned & installed Orings. Runs OK.
3. Battery side covers missing.

I searched for brake master cylinder rebuild kit & found none. Did find replacement for $150 approx. Found rebuild kit for carbs @ $50 approx.

Plan to return bike to as original condition as possible. Riding as frequently as possible.
Repairing as little as possible. I have read the info regarding the details of oil changes ( the $2000.00 Oring) And am aware to listen/look for the obvious issues as with any machine.

Please advise as to fluids & parts that have proven to be advisable for this machine.
First & foremost I will be addressing the brakes.
I want to change all fluids & filters. Tune & rebuild carbs.

Any comments appreciate. I will post pic soon.

Thank you,
Troy

the brakes sound like they have a bunch of gunk and need a flushing.

Wow your first post and already it sounds like you've waded through snowbums site! As you go through getting your new / old bike together here are some links Probably the discount leader for parts is https://chicagobmwmotorcycle.com/2frames/2frame.html  but they don't have a parts fiche on line (here) http://realoem.com/bmw/select.do  and they take a while to deliver. My current favorite is http://www.webparts.com/cycles/  and another outlet that is a bit higher in price but has provided outstanding service is http://www.ascycles.com/illustrated_parts_catalog_main.aspx BMW,  doesn't put the master cylinder, parts on the fiche. Perhaps someone can burn you a copy of their ETK disc in Section 34 and 32, You will find the parts.
Happy wrenching and post some pics when you get it home!

How do Troy.

Sounds like you know where you're at and what you want. about the only thing I'd add to what others have said is with the bike having been stood still out of doors for so long before you change the oil I'd drop the sump pan and clean it out as it will probably be a good bit of sludge in the bottom.

And, those battery side covers are available new for about 25 bucks each, in primer, and a brand spankin' new tool kit (if needed) is $77.77 at http://www.webparts.com/cycles.
Please don't go on Ebay and pay $60-70 for a busted up set of side covers, or $150 for a rusty, almost complete tool roll, okay?   :-?
Sorry, personal pet peeves, but we've all seen it happen a thousand times...

Otherwise, good luck! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
