Title: Clutch cable source

Anybody got a good connection for clutch cables? I found them for $40 from capital.
Someone snuck into my garage and wore my old cable out,it broke leaving the house which I guess is good fortune.

Yes, Motobins looks good.  But all it says is "standard".  What was standard for the U.K.?  High bars?
I think in Germany, low bars are considered "standard".  (the reason I ask)

RealOEM only lists one: L=1495MM

which is close to Hucky's (http://www.bmwhucky.com/010032.html) long one, at 1430mm (all the way at the bottom of the page.)  I like Huckys, but you can't argue with Motobins price!

Don't forget to keep a bit of plain old axle grease on both ends of the cable - especially the top end:

When I replaced the clutch cable of my LS I measured its total length and ordered the "right one" from MAX.  The "right one" came witht eh right overall dimensions and with BMW signs all over it but it seemed longer than the old one; hard to adjust for freeplay.  

Another critical measurement that one needs to be aware of is the fully extended length of the bare part of the cable from the end of the housing.  It appears there are variances in that length.  I was able to adjust the new cable but it was near the max extension.  

So, morale of the story, look for the total length of the cable and what is the measured length of the extended, "naked" part of the cable to ensure you have the right cable.

Regarding Rob's posting: very good stuff (if you can find any!) to put on exposed control cable ends is the special grease for old pre-O-ring final chains like on classic Brit bikes. This very heavy grease is specifically intended to throw off water. For a chain you used to heat it until runny, remove the chain and soak it in the stuff. For a clutch lever etc just smear it on. In UK it's still sold, I think called Chain Prep. Used to be sold, maybe still is, as Linklyfe. Used only on cable ends a can will last you about 300 years so best to find an old-bike nut who has one!

Not heard of it for many years but brings back happy memories of being caught by my mother boiling a chain in a tin of Linklyfe on the kitchen stove. For some strange reason she didn't understand the engineering purity of lubricating a chain this way.... and I quite liked the smell !

Low bars are "UK /Eu" standard it gives the variations on the same page at about the same price.
