Does anyone know where to find fork gaiters for a 79 r65 ?
And if so whats the procedure for fitting?
I'm in Brisbane Australia.
I'm new to the airhead and motorcycling world. [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

They are OEM BMW parts, you need the 13 rib gaiters fro an R65 the 11 rib ones won't work .
To install them, you need to remove both forks from the bike .
-
Thanks Bob,
Do you happen to the part number?
-
Hi again bob,
Only gaiters / boots i could find on RealOEM.com where for 87 r65GS model and onwards.
Below is a list of parts and numbers, do you or anyone else know if these are compatable with the 79 r65? The fork slider look different to me?????
Does this matter?
Regards Ian
01 Hose clamp L=47-54MM 4 07129952121 $1.42
02 Ring 2 31421241669 $6.97

This is one receipt for parts that I misplaced .
I got the gaiters from a dealer on the east coast of the US .
Bob's BMW http://bobsbmw.com/ .
Currently their parts section isn't available to me, I'll keep trying later today .
I know another member here, Rob Valdez, has them on his bike, I don't know if he has a part number available or not .
-
Some Beemer guys shop the truck sites for Rancho gaiters. Lots of bling-y colors to choose from. Measure the diameters of the lower slider attach point and the fork leg -36mm IIRC- then go do your shopping.

I finally got onto the website, but the part number they have for the gaiters is their own number, the boots are now aftermarket and don't have a BMW part number .
-
Thanks Bob and Monte for your replys and Bob your efforts.
Much appreciated.
I have sent an enquiry and parts list off to a couple of Bm shops in Brisbane, waiting for a reply.
I'll try and contact Rob Valdez if i get no joy from them.
Monte excuse my ignorance but what does 11rc mean in reference to fork diameter???
Thanks again guys for your help

I just installed the 11 rib gaiters on the R90. Got 'em from Hucky's BMW and he also lists the 13 ribbers on his parts list. It's not a particularly difficult task but you do have to drop the fork tubes out of the triple clamp so that may mean removing the headlight, binnacle, and such. I have found Hans to be straight up and honest and very quick to ship. Go to bmwhucky.com.
Oh and in case he can't recall because he does get quite forgetful in his dotage, when Monte uses IIRC he means "if I remember correctly" but that's pretty much a crapshoot with the old coot. [smiley=shoot.gif]

Here's a page from Hucky's BMW, it's got the 13 rib boot and BMW part number .

Mine are 11-rib. 31 42 1 234 908 on my invoice dated 17 April '92. That is the same part number Hucky has for the 11-rib.
I don't think I would want 13 ribs, as there would be too much material and they would restrict the full compression travel of the forks, as was pointed out to me by Duane.
I don't know who advised me on which boot to put on in 1992.
I had the bottom of the boots pulled "just over" the tops of the sliders, and Duane said to pull them down as far as they would go, to allow more free space.

They are pulled down, in this picture:

I heard that.
Just remembered that I celebrated, at least I think I did, a geezer birthday a couple weeks ago, IIRC.

Thanks for the info Bob and Rob,
I did find these at Beemershop.com
http://www.beemershop.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=173
I counted 14 ribs but i don't know the dimensions.
I will try and find a stockist for the 11-rib. 31 42 1 234 908
Here in oz first.
Looking at your pics Rob it doesnt look like theres anymore room
between the forks and mudguard to fully extend the 13 ribber, unless
the spaces between the ribs are smaller on the 13????
The plot thickens..............
Thanks once again guys for your generous input and efforts.

Hi Ian
Munich Motorcycles in Western Australia have the 13 rib gaiters on their online shop for $40 AUD and the 11 rib ones for $48.
http://www.munichmotorcycles.com.au/index.php?cPath=505_17_60_1035&osCsid=5be810dbee8330292604ca441baf5267
I have dealt with them frequently and they are very good.
Are you sure you need the gaiters, my personal preference is for naked forklegs.
Cheers Bruce

Hi Bruce,
Thanks for the reply and link, I'd seen them pop up a few times in
other forum chats and had completely forgot.
To gaiter or not to gaiter that is the question............
Well Bruce i guess its a personal thing, but there's also a few
unsurfaced roads near ( nothing crazy ) me which i wouldn't mind
checking out and i don't want dust going where it isn't invited.
Thanks again for the reminder.
Merry Xmas to you and everyone who has offered me assistance
Regards

If you do go for the gaiters, look for a small drain hole at one end, the 13 rib boots that I got had them, about a 3 mm or so hole, easy to miss if you're not looking for them .
Place them at the bottom for drainage, if moisture happens to get in there .
-
I lost one fork leg to scratching. Luckily it was while the bike was under warranty. From that day on, I knew fork gaiters would always be a part of my motorcycling.
-
I have 11 rib gaiters on mine and don't see how I could fit anything more. Mine have the small hole on the top end of the gaiter, the end that fits the fork tube instead of the end that fits the fork leg. I was told to drill a small hole through the bottom of the triple tree and insert a roll pin in the triple tree hole and the gaiter hole. To allow air passage after the gaiter is compressed and keep the gaiter from collapsing when the fork rebounds.

11-rib fit fine.
