I wonder if someone could advise me on whether a power take off (the old cig lighter) needs a fuse? I've bought one to charge a GPS or 'phone. I doubt that I'll charge a laptop battery with it but maybe a floodlight.

As long as the power outlet socket itself is fed via a fuse then you shouldn't need another one.
The purpose of a fuse is to protect the cabling in the event of a short circuit so to be absolutely correct any cable you add to the circuit should be able to carry the same current as the fuse rating.
Not that fuses blow at their rated value but lets not go there ... much too deep a can of worms.

And to protect the wiring, I would suggest any fuse be situated as close to the power source/battery as possible.

OK Thanks. I was going to connect it directly to the battery. It's rated as 10AMP for 12 Volt.

The optional power takeoff (which was standard on Aussie bikes) has an inline fuse on the + wire to the battery. The socket is not a cigarette lighter socket, rather it's a purpose designed power socket available from Hella, Bosch, etc. Adapters and cigarette lighter plugs with a removable part to fit these sockets are available.

Unfortunatly it's having surgery performed at present via honed cylinder, new rings & head reco. I was hoping to get it back by last Friday but now won't be until the 5th Jan.
