Title: Final Drive Oil Leak
Post by: Bob_Roller on December 13, 2010, 02:17:19 PM
I've had a small but constant oil leak from the final drive since I serviced it with oil around 5-6 weeks ago .

Originally I thought it was from the rear brake cam shaft .

I had problems with the rear brake, the dot that you align to be in the gap of the brake lever that slides onto the cam was in the wrong place, I inadvertently pushed the cam shaft in and caused the seal closest to the brake shoes to start leaking .

After I got that problem solved a leak reappeared about two weeks later .

I had just gotten back to work after five weeks of vacation, no one filled in for me while I was gone, so five weeks of work backed up on me, today is the first day that I've had off that I wasn't worn out from the 16 hour work days for the last three weeks getting caught up on work .

I cleaned off the final drive housing last night and determined this afternoon that the leak was coming from the gasket area between the final drive and swing arm .

It's a pretty simple junction, a thin paper gasket .

I removed the final drive and found the paper gasket cut to where there was about a 2-3 mm gap in the gasket at the bottom .

I assumed that during reassembly that somehow I messed up and cut the gasket .

After removing the gasket from the final drive, it separated like it was die cut through a bolt hole .

The hole in the center had been double cut when it was manufactured .

I didn't feel so bad about it now that I knew I wasn't at fault .

I bought two gaskets a week ago, my plan was to use two gaskets with sealer on them and that would solve the problem .

I removed the first gasket from the envelope and it separated in the same way that the failed gasket had .

The other gasket was in good shape .

If it hadn't been an easy fix, I would be a bit upset , if this had been a transmission instead .

But at least it's a warm day, at 1300 it's 87 F. (31 C.) in the garage . ;)
