Help please. My bike shifted up to the fourth gear yesterday after cold starting but refuses to shift again. The gearlever is still spring-loaded and moves on the outside but it is not changing the actual gears. Please tell me this is something small and the entire motor does not have to be stripped to fix the problem. What can I try to get the gears unstuck. The only recent change was the oil about 20 miles ago. Changed from standard to a 20W50 grade. Advised to to this because of rather hot summer conditions. Bike goes fine but stays in this one gear (third or fourth).

Well it probably is something small - the selector pawl spring which is known to break and then your stuck in whatever gear was selected at the time.
The part costs next to nothing but unfortunately it's a gearbox out job to replace it. A tale of woe that you will find references to on all Airhead forums. I'd like to say there was another easier possibility but I never heard of one.
Not sure what you mean by changing from standard to 20W50. Are we talking engine oil or gearbox oil ?

Thanks Barry, it was tbe engine oil but I gather that could not have contributed to the problem. Spoke to the agents this morning... They also said it is this spring that broke. They will be charging for 3 hours labour to replace it. Thanks for your help.

I had an oil seal for the transmission shift shaft cause binding of the shifter lever .
I could rock the rear wheel with the bike on the center stand and shift the transmission into neutral .
But after going up through the gears, I couldn't down shift .

3 hours labour to replace the pawl spring sounds very reasonable given the amount of work involved.
Anyone had a gearbox out, apart and back again in anything like 3 hours ?

I just had the transmission out of one of my R65's for a spline lube, and it was 3 hours just for removal and reinstallation of the transmission .
But I suspect the labor cost that was quoted, was just for replacing the pawl spring .

Maybe they want the work and agreed to only charging for 3 hours.

If your not doing it your self then i would get a guarantee that they will only charge you 3 hours my guesstimate would be that they are only giving themselves an hour in the gearbox which isnt long considering that at this stage you can only speculate what the actual problem is.Get them to check the drive splines and lube them while its stripped off.

Very reasonable at 3 hrs. To get o the spring you have to remove the rear cover which entails heating the cover at the bearing mount points.
