Title: starter not working
Post by: Bill Conquest on November 23, 2010, 10:18:20 PM
The starter on my '79 r65 won't turn over when I hit the start button...just makes a click, click, click sound - I checked the battery & charged it. Also tried jumping the bike from my truck.. also ruled out the relay, tried a new one & nothing. The connections seem o.k. - took off the cover tapped the starter gently -now i'm wondering what to try next -it's a valeo I got from stalker starters about 4 yrs. ago. Maybe the bendex device? Any suggestions would be really appreciated - I hate to miss the T-giving day off ride!
Thanks , bill conquest

Cut about an inch of the insulation on the positive cable where it fastens to the battery.
Pull it back and look for white corrosion.  This will hamper things greatly.

Make sure all of your connections are clean and reinstall with any kind (dielectric) grease.

You can also try jumping it from a car battery, if you have small jumper cables.
How old is the battery?

It *could* be that your battery has given up the ghost - even if it has been on a tender..  I'd try jumping with a car battery, or, if you have a multimeter, try this simple test:
1) With key switch "OFF" measure voltage at the battery terminals - should be at least 12.5V (preferably more like 13) at rest with full charge.
2)  Turn key to ON (light up the dash lights and headlamp)  and recheck the voltage - if it has dropped to 11 volts or less, the battery isn't working at full strength - possible internal (partial) short of a cell or two, or sulfation along the bottom of plates if wet cell.
3)  IF the battery checks out and the cables (esp the big ground cable and the big cable to the starter motor) are not corroded and firmly connected - and you've already checked the relay- it may be that the starter is indeed in need or repair and/or cleaning.   The Valeo motor has had a tendency to sometimes drop one of its permanent magnets (glued in place) such that it can lock up the rotor.  But, it could be a dirty.dried up Bendix, or faulty solenoid.

Ive had this issue on my 79 when i first resurected it.I found if i put it in gear and "rocked " ther bike back and forth it cured it !! sticking solenoid or pinion maybe... but its not been an issue since the bike got regular use.
