Title: Torque Specs

I may be wrong but it seems to me that there used to be a torque spec chart for the R65 somewhere on this site.  I cannot find it.  Does anyone know where this is?

What I need today is the torque spec for the valve cover bolts...assuming there is a spec.

You mean the big one in the center?  Not much, or you will strip the threads in the head.

As far as the two small 10mm nuts, I apply plenty of torque with my small box-end wrench, as you don't have to worry about threads - it is steel to steel.  That is where most of the seal comes from, I think.  I have run for years without any center nut or stud.

I've got a BMW shop manual and there is no mention of a torque specification for any of the nuts that hold the valve cover on .

I checked the owners manual as well, still no torque value .

tighten till it gives then back off a quarter turn  :D ;D :D ;D



The manual has two pages at the start that list generic torques.

The first page is for self-locking hexagon nuts,
the second page is for bolts/screws and nuts.

When I get around to scanning it I'll try and post it.

The correct torque setting is just tight enough not to fall off  :)

here's the pages from the BMW manual.
The Haynes manual only lists a torque setting for R80 1985 on.

John thanks for posting that.  Be aware that Snowbum says that some of the torque specs published by BMW may be wrong...especially the foot pounds.  He says that they use the wrong conversion factor from newton metres to foot pounds.

Thanks to all for the handy torque charts,  I like to photocopy a new chart for each job I do since I invariably  wind up getting whatever paper reference I'm using a greasy mess.

Dumb question time:  What do the + values represent in the torque values listed?  Like on the cylinder head nuts that lists 26+3.  What is that + 3?  I've never been able to figure that out. :-/

The +3 means you can go 3 units higher than the nominal figure .

Whether it be Nm or foot pounds .

A lot of times you may see +/- 3, that would be 3 units higher or lower than the stated torque .

I believe on the oilhead bikes, the torque for the nuts holding the cylinder down is a specific torque value, then turn the nut an additional 90 degrees for the final torque, no specific value is given for the final torque .
