Title: First Shakedown Ride On The '82 LS
Post by: Bob_Roller on October 20, 2010, 07:57:42 PM
Got the '82 LS out on the road for a proper shakedown ride, good news is everything I worked on worked fine .

Bad news is a lot of other problems surfaced .

The speedometer quit after 15 miles .

Front brake system which didn't seem to be bad, needs to be rebuilt, no question about it now .

So now the big question, should I remove all of the necessary parts off of the '84 LS, or bite the bullet now and just replace/repair the system now .

The front brake rotors are at the minimum wear limit, .180 inches/4.5 mm .

The Staintune exhaust has a deeper tone to it, as compared to a stock exhaust .

First question Bob, is which of the two was the bike you purchased new?  If memory serves it was the '82.  So is there a non-intellectual emotional attachment to that one?  For me, there would be.

Secondly, is the '84 a beater you were going to restore/refurbish?  Might be worth more to someone else and use the money for parts.  On the other hand, if it has more value as a parts bike, then go ahead an do the alligator roll on that bike.

For my part, I love the R65 but don't know what I would do with two of them.  Besides, you have a sweet little Lario that's just begging for some TLC.  That was Guzzi's answer to the 65.

That's my two cents and with inflation I'm not sure it's worth that any more.   [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

I got both LS's used, both high mileage (the '82 78,000 miles, the '84 has 91,000 miles), so, I'm not too surprised with the situation .

I'll take a day or so and decide what to do .

I've got three R65's, the '81 is the one I bought new in '81 .

In that case, I'd probably pull good parts from one or both to get one (second?) "good" runner. Keep the third as a Hangar Queen organ donor.

I'm kind of leaning towards the 'Dr. Frankenstein' procedure, I just hope I don't get any 'abi-normal' parts n the process .

The left fork is leaking oil now, so I might as well replace the seals on both forks while I'm at it, I foresaw this possibility and ordered all the parts necessary to rebuild two forks a few months ago  .
