Title: Fuse Box Location '86 R65
Post by: Matt Chapter on August 13, 2010, 09:10:02 PM
My clymer manual suggests that the fuses can be found under the seat and tool tray, however my particular R65 doesn't have a tool tray.  (The tools are stored in the body work that houses the tail light.)  The only thing I've seen that could be fuses are two white pill shaped ceramic pieces with a metal band each across them lengthwise in a little plastic box just above the battery where the frame backbone ends.  Are these the fuses, and if not where else should I look?

Thanks,
Matt

It is a fuse-type that was very common in Europe for a long time.
Probably for as long as the U.S. has had the mini glass fuses.

Matt,

The little wiki here at R65 dot org has an article prepared by some goofball that works pretty well. Eliminates the troublesome Euro-style fuses in exchange for a weatherproof mini-blade set up. NAPA has what you need.

There are aftermarket alternatives to the stock fuse box .

Here's just a small sample of what's available .

Thanks for the invite, Matt. Just might take you up on it as I'm down there quite often. Both my sons and grandkids live in that last bastion of the Texas Democratic Party.

Bought both my R65s in Austin. Hey, Bengt... there's free coffee and pastries every Saturday morning at Lone Star BMW.

And, Matt... I could probably lead you astray at some of the Austin joints I frequent!

Those European fuses are why in some climates cleaning and re-greasing the fuses is an annual Volvo 240 ritual - if you don't like walking...

I think I'm going to try Monte's solution, since the expenditure is probably the least.  Sure enough, when I opened it up, the fuse was broken.  Long story short, it was my fault when I was replacing the wiring harness I had taken them out and bent one putting them back in.  With any luck, I'll be able to implement the fix tomorrow.  I'd never had any fuse trouble until now, so I can't complain.

I find Lone Star to be a typical BMW dealer, although they do have triumphs to look at, and they also did turn me onto a local mechanic that's willing to work on the R65 for jobs I don't want to do.
