heya guys! I'm having a starter issue with my r65. as it heats up a hesitation before anything happens at all when I hit the starter button, eventually it will not activate at all, the hotter it gets.
The pic is to ask if someone will help me identify the unit on top. Is it the solenoid? if not what and where is the solenoid?
Thanks in advance

That's the diode rectifier board, it rectifies AC electricity from the alternator, to DC electricity .
The solenoid is on the starter .
You need to remove the top cover cover of the engine to access it .
Before you go in real deep with this problem, the starter relay is under the tank, it has a wiring diagram molded into the top cover, when the starter gives you problems, if you can remove the fuel tank and press down on the top of the cover to manually operate the relay, just to eliminate this part and possibly save you some work .
If this doesn't work, first guess to your starter problem, is the starter is 'dry' on lubricant, it needs a good internal cleaning and re-lubrication and possibly the sintered bushings at each end of the armature shaft .
In the FAQ and Procedures section, there is a pictorial guide on how to disassemble clean and reassemble the starter, including how to clean up the contacts of the solenoid .
Oh yeah, welcome to the forum, post all of the questions you have about your bike, there's a wealth of knowledge here !!!!!
After taking a second look at your photo, I notice a fair amount of corrosion, you may want to check all of the electrical connections for corrosion .
The positive battery cable, goes directly to the starter, we've seen a few examples here, of this cable developing corrosion at the battery end, under the insulation .

Thank you for the attention and help. I will see to electrical contacts and get at the solenoid but felt
I should I become more clear on what you wrote (quoted below).. could you please restate ?
I am probably not understanding is all, thanks again.

what year is your bike?
(put it in your signature line so we don't have to ask every time)

What I was trying to say, is when the starter quits working, remove the fuel tank to gain access to the starter relay .
Press down on the top of the relay, you can manually close the electric contacts by doing this, and if the starter works while you are pressing down on the relay cover, the starter is good, and the problem may be the starter relay itself .

If you lift off the fuel tank (there is a loop/catch mechanism at the rear underside which hooks onto the backbone of the frame) - you also have to disconnect the fuel line and overflow line (if attached) AND make sure that the fuel petcock(s) are in the "OFF" position first! Along the top of the motorcycle frame, exposed by removing the fuel tank, you will see some electrical "boxes" which are the relays, voltage regulator, etc. They should look something like this (names added to help you identify):

Also, from looking at your pic of your diode board, I see that the board is coated with gray "paint" /conformal coating. These units had a tendency to sometimes have soldering problems which could cause one or more bad diode connections -> resulting in poor/no charging of battery and/or the GEN light staying on. The corrected units are identifiable with either a black painted stripe across the gray coating or an all black painted coating - either will work - or- consider potentially upgrading to a new/aftermarket diode board at some point in the future - Motorrad Elektrik sells them and they are good units for less than new BMW parts:

But what if he has a '78-'80 model?

Hey thanks you guys, and Bob now I got what you mean. Srry to leave out the year, 1982.. and thanks for the diode bd inf nhmaf.
Ill be taking this all in and getting to it this week. Again good on you all for the help. seems my pic was a lil xtra large. Ill work on that too.

Check the thread on starter troubleshooting.

It may help you a lot, especially with checking out the relay. There are some good links in some of the postings.
