Hi guys, first post on here and I've got a question.
I have an '84 r65 that needs a front brake overhaul (ATE calipers). I''ve been offered a full r100 brake system but its BREMBO. My question is, will the calipers and discs bolt straight on to my r65?
I've been on bikes for the last 20 years but this is my first foray into beemer territory so I'm not sure what fits what yet.
Thanks for any info

The rotors and calipers are pretty much R65 specific .
-
I had a feeling they might be. Thanks for the reply. Mine is a twin disc set up and the guy selling the r100 gear also has an r65 parts bike with a single disc. This might be the way to go. I'm in Ireland and sourcing parts here is a nightmare.

If all you need is the common replacement parts seals gaskets and the like, Motobins has the parts available at quite reasonable prices .
If you have considered replacing the brake lines, the braided stainless lines are a good choice over rubber lines, cost is not that much more than stock lines .

I would suggest an attempt at overhauling what you have and see if that doesn't meet your needs. And if the brake disc on the spare R65 is less worn than yours, perhaps make an offer on it.

Even if I bought a new used brake system, I would want to overhaul it before I installed it.
Here are the pictures I took when I overhauled my front brake.

I hear a lot of negative things about the ATE's. I have to let you all know; I couldn't be happier with my dual ATE's on my 81 R65 after completely rebuilding the calipers with a well serviced master cylinder. In fact I can't imagine better front braking. I honestly feel a big problem are mis-adjusted calipers. Once these calipers are adjusted properly - they work extremely well on these bikes, in my opinion. I agree with Rob, Bob and Monte, you may want to rebuild the system first before making any big decisions regarding replacement.
Just my opinion...

O.K., there are two entirely different ATE braking systems used on BMW's. The earlier type were used on the /6 and /7. I have never owned a bike with one, but from what I have heard, they do take a particular type of adjustment that Mike V. inferred to. The fixed ATE calipers (as opposed to "swinging") that we have on our R65's are much less maintenance intensive to get maximum effect.
This is what the "swinging" ATE calipers look like. (http://www.pbase.com/tomfarr/image/125386439)

The Brembos are easy to service - and I replaced my front brake pads last weekend in a jiffy!

The ATEs on my 81 dual disc were pretty sucky till I rebuilt them. As I recall, I had some stainless pistons made because the old ones were badly pitted and NLA. With new pistons and seals, they ROCKED! I also think they're prettier than the Brembos.

The calipers will bolt straight up with no issues.
The R100 disks, however, have a different 'dish' as the fork legs are a different distance apart. The yokes on a R65 are wider than those on a R100.
The easiest option would be to rebuild the ATE's, as long as you can get the spares cheaply. When I tried some years ago, I found it was far cheaper to buy a second hand set of Brembo calipers that rebuild my ATE's. Which is what I did.
However you need to check your master cylinder as well, as the piston size of the brembo calipers are different to the ATE's so should ideally run with a different master cylinder...I forget the numbers. If you run the old master cylinder, the brakes will work fine, but they will be 'wooden' and lack feel/progression.
So you pays yer money and makes your choice.
I have since gone down to a single disk setup, from a dual disc - but hey, I never could run with the crowd.
Cheers

My 79 has twin ATE,s which i fully rebuilt and fitted stainless braided lines. My brothers 81 is Brembo i cannot tell the differance and have every confidence in mine.

From what I have heard, the Brembo calipers (on R65s) were pretty much exact copies of the earlier ATE.

Thanks for the replies. My braking problems are extremely worn discs, pitted pistons, and a cracked master cylinder so a refurb isn't feasible, I'd pick up a complete used system cheaper. Unfortunately, with the exchange rate and high postage costs, Motobins and ebay can get a bit pricey. Luckily I have a buddy who owns a salvage yard and he's just got in an r100 and an r65. I've got first call on any parts so hopefully I can bodge together a working system.
I've had my r65 about a year, I rode it for a couple of months and now its shed bound, waiting for its new guise as a cafe racer. I'll post pics as the work progresses
