Title: Wiring harness routing
Post by: Flash on June 03, 2010, 01:44:20 PM
Does anyone have a link to some photos of how the wiring harness is routed around the steering head? My handwritten notes have failed me.

Thanks, Everyone

Flash,

Don't know if these will help or not. When I get home I can forward more photos I have in my archives. Contact me off-list (mvtv@cox.net), I also have sketches in jpg format. These are all for a 81 R65. I think a key factor for me was to loop the main loom to the headlight bucket under the triple clamp then up into the light bucket securing the metal clips where it branches to the turn signals. Here's a photo link but not much detail in the steering head area. Take a close look and see if these help.

I think the best way to do it is what seems logical.  I took mine out recently and one was routed above the small crossbar near the top of the frame and another was not.

Mike V did you install new harnesses/wiring in your bike or did you just clean up the wires.  I'm impressed by how clean looking they are compared to mine.  If you cleaned them up what did you use?

Mike,

All original. I replaced a lot of the wrapping with friction tape. I went through all the connections with electrical contact cleaner, and 400 grit wet-dry paper and rotary tool. Blew everything dry and applied a very small amount of dielectric grease in the fittings after popping them in and out several times to be sure the contact points were clean. Any connectors or connections that were questionable, I replaced or repaired. Bench tested everything I could. Not a fun job.  I spent lots of hours on that loom and connecting harnesses.  I also fished the main loom in-between the main backbone and lower support member to get it out of the way.  I'm glad I spent the time for that - it enabled all the other wiring and cables to have plenty of room. I promised myself I would do whatever it takes to only deal with the electrics once.  I'm an idiot with electrons.  I just don't get it. I've never understood what I "can't' see.  I'm learning more and more all the time.
