Sounds like it might be some sort of catalyst. There are widely diverging views on whether these things work. Many people say they are "snake oil"

The lead compound that was added to fuel, was tetra-ethyl lead, a horrendously poisonous material in a strong concentration .

I am quite doubtful that the bar of lead in your fuel tank is a tetra-ethyl lead compound, let alone doing any real good for your engine .

I thoughht i saw them for sale in NZ or Oz.

Caveat Emptor.

If you feel like adding something then try Marvel Mystery Oil (2oz per 5 gals) -- seems to do quite well.

Just curious why you would want to add anything.  The TE additive was supposedly added to improve valve performance.  If you are running an oil with an SG rating then you're going to get the zinc that is required.  In today's PC Go Green Viva Sustainability OMG Global Warming environment that's about all you can reasonably do.

Marvel Mystery Oil added to gasoline?  I have used it as an oil additive in some cars to promote better lubrication of the top end of the engine, but never heard of adding it to gasoline.  What is is supposed to do when added to gasoline?

Lubricates the top end (rings and valves) and keeps the rubber bits fresh.  Also keeps fuel system things clean.

(clean is good)
