My 82 selector rod is a U shaped steel rod connecting the shift lever to the pedal and secured at both sides with a weird anchor clip. The parts microfiches always show in addition to this piece a more complex rod with adjusting screws at both ends. Am I missing something or can either type of linkage can be used? I am not trusting anything to the PO...

Hey fermin. I just went through this. There should be a long thread titled shifter linkage somewhere down the line a bit. Justin makes them (or did) and there was some talk of him making some more if there was enough interest. I ordered my shifter linkage replacement from Bob's bMW for like $35 with shipping and it made a big difference on my bike

That kinda looks like the "coat hanger" shift linkage that BMW had on the earlier units - it had a rubber "accordion" or bellows type tube over it ? (or did have at one time). The threaded adjuster units are better (and adjustable!) but they have a weakness in that the fiber/felt washers they have on the ends that go through the holes tend to disintegrate over time and contribute to slop/looseness. The shift linkage that our moderator Justin B developed is the cat's arse, as they say, and is an excellent replacement, 'cept that Justin doesn't have anymore parts.
There is a recent thread on this topic though and if you have some metal fab tools in your garage you can build your own with the HEIM joints available from Aircraft Spruce - or maybe we can all put together enough of an order at once to motivate someone to build another batch of these - they should last almost forever.

Im on the aftermarket thread.., the rubber accordion cover is still there I'm holding it back with my fingers. That linkage plus the fact that the pedal itself has a worn bushing makes for a sloppy loose kind of mechanism.

I saw you post on the 'after market shift linkage ' thread. I hope we get enough orders for justin to make some more. not so much for me, I just replaced mine, but for those who have replaced theirs yet. My 'coat hanger' linkage never did feel right, then one day it broke in half. I couldn't be happier with the replacement.

Not only it doesnt feel right, between the 'coathanger rod' and the worn bushing its just darn sloppy. At least the gears change, I m getting a slight grind from 1st to second, but finally after having the bike in the garage for close to 3 months I was able to take it out and run around at will around the neighborhood. Im hoping for Justin to get enough orders and make us all happy or order another linkage in the next couple of weeks.
