Title: front brakes dragging r65ls
Post by: cobra407 on May 19, 2010, 05:24:28 AM
My bike has only 10000 miles with everything original.
I have the 2 ATE calipers and I am getting a little drag on the front brakes. I think there are 3 possibilites:
- new pads
- rebuild calipers
- new brake lines

Which is most likely? thanks peter

Could be a calipers may need an overhaul or is there air in your brake lines?  The brake pads should release when you let go of the brake lever.

A good guy to ask on this is Mattias Schaub - he owns Spiegler Performance.  I bought new red brake lines from his company and had him convert my front rotors to floaters and also bought new Carbone Loraine disc pads.  Spiegler is all about brakes.  Good people.

I had a similar drag and the problem was simply air in the system...

If you look very carefully you should be able to see if one or both pistons are retracting when you release the lever. I could see that one piston was not retracting properly.

A clean and re-build of the calipers cured mine and if you have a firm lever now it's not air and a re-build should cure yours. Be prepared for a little more lever travel after a re-build when both pistons are retracting freely. The brakes will still have a little more bite

There have been a few owners, that had the small diameter hole in the master cylinder where fluid is drawn from the reservoir was clogged, causing them to have a slightly dragging brake .

But I would agree, it's probably time to disassemble the calipers, and perform a good cleaning and seal replacement .
