As per comments in other threads, the spline lube on the '82 turned into a tranny removal job. I thought I had drained the transmission oil some weeks ago before starting the bike but actually I had only changed the driveshaft and final drive oil. The transmission oil seems to be pretty bad, thick and dark. Is this as bad as it gets?. Also found a few gritty grains in the plug and a tear in the Universal boot. As the bike had been at rest for years, I think I'll replace the boot and put everything back together, draining the transmission oil again when hot.

From the look of the drained oil, it doesn't have the appearance of being water contaminated .

But it sure is filthy! I wonder if it was ever changed ?

Yes it didnt appear to have water droplets, I dont think it would emulsify. But it may have never been changed. At least there was oil inside

Always nice to see oil inside eh.....change the oils in the bike every year or two if they are not used much, as the oils absorb moisture anyhow. If yiu are a rider, change the oils every 5000K....oil is cheap by comparison to the alternatives.

I'm not sure what emulsify means, but yes, the water does mix with the oil quite well, and ends up looking a lot like coffee with cream in it.

Mine gets changed twice a year when I switch from summer weight (85W140) to winter weight (80W90) and back again in the spring,
Helps me spot trouble early! 8-)
