Title: Exhaust Split Rings
Post by: Mike V on May 05, 2010, 08:30:28 AM
Maybe a silly question; I noticed only a single split tapered ring at the exhaust header on the 81 R65. Is there only one? Unlike my /7, which has a solid ring and a split tapered ring. Close inspection of the 650 looks like the tapered split ring fits into a tapered machined face at the inside of the finned nut allowing compression at the header while the flat side of the split ring fits snug at the head.  REAL OEM shows only one ring also, is this correct or am I missing the solid rings in combination with the split ring?

Mike,
The R65s do use only the one split ring - this tends to cause confusion among folks with the larger airheads as it is different.   At this moment I can't recall 100% if it is supposed to be flat side toward the nut or toward the head side -  but I think the slat side is against the head so the nut will compress it.
