Anyone have a torque value for the 8mm hex screws that clamp the two halves of the dual piston ATE caliper together. I 've got a figure of 26 lb/ft for the mounting bolts but non of the usual sources has anything for the clamping screws. Ive guessed at 15 lb/ft for now which may be on the low side given these screws are subject to a spreading force when the caliper is in use.
BTW it's a fairly straight forward job to strip and clean the calipers just make sure to get Both pistons most of the way out with hydraulic pressure before draining the fluid.

I don't recall what torque I used for reassembly. Plenty, but not too much?
They haven't come loose, yet... (4 years)

Were you able to find the gasket/o-ring that goes between the halves? I didn't use a torque wrench on mine, just got them good and tight.

I have plenty of the caliper O-rings on hand if yours need replacing. Send me your address off-line if you wish - I can send you some of the replacements I found. They're not available in terms of OEM or even identified with a point number. See the attached tech report I put together.

Rob your pictures were my inspiration. I've had this pegged as a rainy day job ever since seeing them some time back now. Mine were not half as bad as yours but there was enough brown goo to make the exercise worthwhile and a good clean and polish of everything has made the pistons retract a little better. A bit of rust on one piston edge was caught in time before it spread to the seal region so I'm happy to have got the job done.
Ed/Mike I just used the old square section ring and have no leaks. All the rubber bits were in such good condition I'm thinking a PO has done this at least once before in the last 32 years. Impressive write up Mike and thanks for the offer.

For our members in Europe, Motobins has the o-rings that sit between the caliper halves, on their website in the brakes section .
Motobins part number : 23290, cost 1GBP .

No, I reused my o-rings. But now I see it doesn't need to be so!

I re-used mine too. That was years ago before I ever even rode my R65, and they work. So long as I change the brake fluid every year or two I don't expect to have to go back in there any time soon.
However, I just finished placing an order to Motobins for a factory shop manual, so it would have been a good time to pick up some little stuff like that! >:(

How timely....I hadn't checked the forum for a while nor done anything on the 1.8 R65s for quite a few weeks. And then this morning, I finished cleaning and reassembling the right side ATE dual caliper from a wad of ATE and Brembo caliper bits that came with "the Pile". I too re-used the inner square-profile O-ring and the best of the inner seals and seal covers after soaking them all for days in Dot 4.
Question:
Has anyone used washers to shim the caliper 1-2mm off the fork mounting points before? Although the left side caliper is nicely squared around the disc, the right side caliper could use to be shifted outward from the fork by this distance.
Thoughts?

The are spacers that go into the holes in the fork legs, that have different thickness flanges, that flange area is what centers the caliper over the rotor .
They are available from BMW, don't know if they are shown in the brake section, or the fork section .

Thanks Bob, - I didn't notice any spacers (!). I'll take a squint tonight and see what's there.
Another question - Shop Manuals:
I have the big Clymers, the Restorer's Guide and R45-R65 specific shop manual (eBay from New Zealand) but none of these have comprehensive blow-up diagrams or parts lists w/BMW numbers and/or descriptions. Is there a parts list with diagrams specifically for the R65?

Here's a photobucket link to my ATE brake rebuild, hopefully this will help you out. I think I remember the right side caliper having shim inserts while the left side didn't. I believe these are centering shims so your bike may vary (as mentioned in a previous post). Hopefully one of my photos will answer any questions or be of some help Your set-up may vary.

You guys are awesome. This is exactly the info I needed. Very nice, clear pics Mike! Ah HA! I now see the sleeves of which you speak...and there appear to be none of the little devils amid "The Pile". It also appears that there are 5 different sizings ranging from 1,2mm to 3,5mm. 'Looks like I'll need to do some measuring before ordering.
Again, a question:
The parts books don't seem to differentiate between ATE and Brembo for these 5 different sleeve part numbers. Is there a difference?

The spacer/sleeves are compatible for both ATE and Brembo calipers .
