Title: Wire routing issue
Post by: Flash on April 26, 2010, 09:53:53 PM
I'm currently in the reassembly stage of my 1979 R65 after a complete strip down. I'm hooking the electrics up and everything seems to be going OK but I've run into two issues.
My first is I can't find the connector that attaches to the points condenser. And if I did, I can't figure out where it exits the front cover to connect to the coils. It seems that all available exits are taken up.
Any idea on how this thing is routed?
My other concern is an unused male connector on the front left of the diode board. It's the one that is doubled up with the connector that holds the large red wire going to the starter. This one doesn't have the expected wear marks, so it may have been left unused on my model, but I just want to be sure.
My notes when disassembling weren't as detailed as they should have been. Thanks for your input.

I was hoping I might have a picture online, but I couldn't find one.  Someone else?

Things are coming together. I took a break and revisited my issue, and this is what if found...
The lead going to the condenser is a single black lead that exits the front cover in the grommet with the starter lead.
This changes my questions to: Is the vertical male connection on the back of my diode board unused on my model? There is a three pronged connector lead that enters that cover, and as far as I can tell, the black lead either goes to the vertical male connector on the back of the diode board, or connects to the starter relay. If that male connector on the back of the diode board is unused than the problems are solved....
That three way connector coming out of the rear grommet on the engine cover hooks to a plastic relay with a red top. Is that the starter relay?  Thanks.

That is correct. The other end of the black wire connects to Terminal 1 on the Front ignition coil (assuming you are retaining twin 6 V coils).

I spent a while searching the archives and came across Rob Valdez's great photo gallery, which answered all my questions.

Thanks all... and thanks Rob.

I don't know if you can see any numbers on the diode board, next to the push on terminals, but if you do, it goes on the D+ terminal .

You inspired me to link those two similar electrical galleries together!
