Title: Side Cases
Post by: wxp on April 13, 2010, 10:34:09 PM
Anyone know what kind of side cases I can put on my '80 r65.  I have mounting brackets for OEM stuff I guess but can't seem to find any at a reasonable price.  Saw a photo awhile back of a r65 w/some newer aftermarket bags on it, looked pretty good.

Are there several different models that can be fitted to our bikes other than the ol' Krauser bags.

Pretty much just the Krausers and it's variants (Star - smaller), or the BMW touring bags.

The touring bags don't come up for sale real often, and they don't last long when they do.  But of the two, they are the ones I would recommend.  I just bought a new set to replace ones destroyed in a crash, and the final bill is not for the faint of heart.  You have to buy the locks and reflectors and badges all separately!  But boy, are they nice!  And I just had the six locks keyed the same as my ignition key!

But those are the only two common options I know of for your standard loops.

A lot of people have made their own bags that attach to the loops.  Someone, and I think it was on here, a fellow in Alaska for sure, made some really nice bags.  I don't remember if they mounted to loops, but I'll try and track down the thread.

Thanks for the info Rob.

I know I saw a photo of a r65 on this site that had a fairing & some aftermarket bags on it.  I'll search for it..

I suppose one would have to make mounting hardware of some sort to get something to work??

The bags you put on, are the OEM stuff?  Got any photos??

I don't get a picture when I click on your link up there.

I hope you're not looking for my bike:

I like those Perry Scott bags because they have running lights on them, but they don't fit the bike well.

I think that he might mean Semper's bike - or someone in that Georgia-thru-North Carolina region - who had an R65 fully setup with what looked kinda like Givi bags and fairing?   I cannot remember who has what anymore ! :D

Ah, yes, I believe that I am right!  Here is the thread I'm thinking of with Semper's luggage and mount modifications:

No, this is a guy up in Alaska.  When I get a chance, I will nose around advrider.com and see if it is over there.

wxp, this is what my bags look like.

Rob,

Thanks for the pics...All the OEM bags that come up are usually overpriced IMO..I'll figure something out. Sempers bags look good, though not the one I originally was thinking of.

Right now a milk crate seems to be doing fairly well for me..My wife thinks it looks getto...probably... but works for me

Like everything $$$ gets it figured out

I'm still trying to get the bugs worked out on the carbs..Freshened them up over the winter, trying to get them adjusted properly...hadn't been able to ride it for a couple of weeks.

Thanks
