I'm restoring a neglected R65LS. The p/o had cut a rectangle in the instrument cowl and had an ashtray mounted. Not to my taste, I removed it and am now left with a square hole. Another question: are the green turn signal plastic lenses available for purchase - for whatever reason when I go to the Realoem.com for the BMW parts fiche, I don't see the cowl in any of the diagrams
I'm looking for suggestions as to what I can put in the ashtrays place. Your suggestions are very welcome.
The other question I'm seeking advice on is on the "locking" gas cap. The cap was stuck on the bike. Once I figured out how it went together, I used a small drill to make a hole and stuck a nail between the two pieces to remove the cap. The lock is kaput. So, is there some kind of emblem or a something that will go in the hole in place of the lock and should I use a small black rivet or long black metal screw to cover the hole and hold the two pieces of the cap together at the same time.

The BMW part numbers for the turn directional lights on the instrument panel are : left lens 62141243581, right lens 62141243582 .
You can go to RealOEM, and put the part number in the search box, and it will show you the bikes it was originally installed on from the factory .
Also, if you have a problem finding a part, sometimes go to the larger displacement bikes made in the same time frame, and chances are, it will be shown, and a part number listed .
If you can find a digital display clock, it may well fill the hole in your instrument trim .

Or ditch the whole cowl thing and go with a Vapor instrument, like Monte did. (I hope I'm remembering right.) I'm trying to think if I would have any use for an ash tray, change storage?
Some people glue little BMW roundels to the carb tops; that seems about the same size as the ignition switch hole. Snowbum's BMW tech site has an article on the different roundels, maybe one would fit.

I think that I'd just get a new cap so that I needn't worry about the pieces coming apart. It doesn't matter if the key doesn't match the ignition key, as I never lock my airhead's gas cap anyway.
The little digital clock is smaller than the gaping hole that you've got - I'd keep my eyes open for a used&intact cowling on fleabay, IMBWR, BMWMOA websites and on fleabay - might also give the guys at Re-psycle.com a try, too. If you buy a new one from BMW, it will be pricey, but if you want it fast that may be the best alternative.

Hi Ken,
I purchased a new instrument cowl last year from webparts.com and it cost me about US$80.
The part number is 46631242385
At RealOEM the cowl is here:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0359&mospid=47852&btnr=46_0045&hg=46&fg=40
It can be purchased online from webaprts.com at:
http://www.webparts.com/diagram.php?btnr=46_0045&mospid=47853&hg=46&fg=40
Hope this helps,
Paul

Hi Paul, I assume the cowl didn't come with the indicator light lenses or the other black blanking pieces that clip in to the extra switch or clock hole?
-
I think a LS-owning-cigarette-fiend would snatch that up on eBay in a heartbeat!
Do we have any of those here?
:)
Yes, I agree, you should save up for a new cap (quickly!).
Would he need to buy the ring and the gasket, in addition to one of the #5's in this link?

Wow! Only $63 for the cowl. I consider that a good price!

Good Information, Guys! Thanks!
Where's a good place, besides Ebay to buy a new gas cap? The link for the new cowl is great - thanks again!

For the absolute lowest prices, on the average (Motobins in the UK has some good deals), go to Chicago BMW. http://chicagobmwmotorcycle.com/store/
Call them on the phone with your order, and ask them to verify that they have it in stock. If they do not, you could be in for a wait of 3-4 weeks, possibly more. They give a 20% discount off of list. Hard to beat.
In that case, you can shop around.
Breakers may have a nice one on hand.
Re-Psycle in Ohio has been mentioned here many times. http://www.re-psycle.com/
There is a guy in the San Antonio/Austin area?
My favorite to always give my money if he has the parts, Matt Richards, in Georgia. 706.310.0031

Hi All,
Bruce, as you suspected the cowl does not come with the green turn signal inserts, nor the switch hole caps. I also bought a few switch caps after I accidentally bought the wrong ones.
Ken, you may find it more than $63. Webparts doesn't update the fiche prices often enough and I often get a follow up e-mail asking if I am happy to pay a new price. Either way I reckon a new one is worth it while BMW are still happy to make them. I have heard from some in Australia who don't know about Real OEM that this or that part os NLA only to find it still is.
For the record I priced a new LS fairing and it was about AU$350, but ended up getting one off eBay last December.
Best wishes,
Paul

Yeah, Chicago is showing it at $116 USD, - their 20% discount for the patient soul brings it down to $93.
Decent ones pop up on eBay, but they can get out of hand, and for ~ $100 you can have a brand new one. That is always fun!
-
I'm gonna try and get creative with that hole by putting in a voltmeter. I don't see the value in spending another $100 on the bike when the cowl is in pretty good shape. I think a voltmeter will look nice and add some funcationality to the bike.
When I get to that point, I'll post a picture.

Is anyone here still looking for a gas cap?
One has popped up on Ebay at what seems like a reasonable price.
