Title: Heard a sound
Post by: marcmax on April 01, 2010, 07:09:19 AM
A few days ago I took my R65 out for an afternoon ride wearing a half helmet (I usually wear a full face). While I was stopped at a traffic light I heard a tink, tink, tink sound. I started listening for it and heard it whenever I was stopped somewhere, engine still running. I don't know if it is a new sound since I usually wear a full helmet and can't hear some of the softer sounds. The bike is running great, no stumbles at any speed, carbs are synced, starts easy, idles smooth, accelerates smooth.

I got home and listened and the sound is from the exhaust pipes. Turned the bike off and the same sound is coming from the cooling exhausts. Its the sound of expanding and contracting metal. The pipes are used stainless exhaust I picked up about a year ago and just installed in the last few weeks. They are not discoloring from running lean and overheating.

I didn't know if it is something I should be concerned about or just shut up and ride. I have just never noticed it before.

I'd wear your full face helmet, and don't worry about the noise, as these bikes make some unusual sounds, even when they are running great .

Right after I got my '81 R65, I stopped by a friends house, and he is not a motorcyclist, and he told me to take the bike back to the dealer, because it sounded like the engine was 'coming apart' .   [smiley=ROTFLMAO.gif]
