Title: Rings for Nikasil Cylinders
Post by: Mike V on March 28, 2010, 03:32:28 PM
Guys, help me get this straight. I always thought the Nikasil cylinders were to be fitted with the non-Nikasil rings. And vise-versa. I've just received information (unless the source was incorrect, or misinterpreted) the correct rings for my 81 R65 Nikasil cylinders are supposed to be Nikasil rings. Numerous LIST archives searches found nothing specific unless I exhausted my search too soon.

Can someone clear this subject up for me?

My best guess, is that you want plain iron rings on a plated cylinder, as the two parts wouldn't get 'broken in' if they were both chrome or nickel plated, and you would have high oil consumption .

I went to the official BMW parts site, and they only list one number for piston rings, stated to be a kit, so I assume this is for two pistons .

BMW part number : 11 25 1 337 401 .

In the aviation world, I'm pretty sure that chrome cylinders do not get anything but iron rings.
