Title: Piston rings - oil ring upside-down
Post by: Adamastor on March 14, 2010, 05:27:23 PM
Hi there!

Like some of you might remember, I have done a complete top end job on the LS cylinder (low compression because of some deep scratches on the walls). Ath that time and since my RS cylinder had very good compression, I left it alone. (If aint broken, dont fix it!)

Anyway, I got sick of the pushrod tubes oil leak, and decided to change them and get new piston rings since I would have the cylinder out of the engine.
My engine always burned a lot of oil, but I had began to believe it could simply be because of worn valve seats, but today I discovered this:

-> The RS oil piston ring was upside down!

I am actually happy to have found this, since this could mean I have found my oil consumption problem... The Cylinder had however good compression, but I guess the oil ring doesn't have a lot of influence on compression, right?
Tomorrow morning I will start the new rings break-in and hopefully will have a nice surprise with the oil consumption...

Any of you mates has had one of this surprises before?

Sergio

Hasn't happened to me, but I hope that it helps with your oil problem.

Oh boy... after a 15km ride I discovered a major oil leak by one of the rocker arm rubber seals :(
I replaced both with new ones, and checked they were on the right position... can one of them be faulty? What else could be wrong? :( :( :(

Pushrod seals usually start to leak not because the seals are going bad but because the collar that holds pressure on top of the seal starts to slide up the pushrod tube away from the case wall.  If you tap the collars gently down the tube a bit and then either spot weld them in place or put a hose clamp on top so that they don't move anymore you will have better luck with your leaking seals.

Picture of spot welds on collars:

Hi Bill, thanks for the answer... that makes some sense, but I heard somewhere that on later R65 you shouldnt do this because the collar doesnt move.. is this right?
If not, can I tap it with the cylinder on the engine? If I could walk away without taking the cylinder from the engine again, It would be really good...

thanks in advance for all ideas and help :)

I forgot to mention, this is a 1985 R65t with nikasil cylinders...
