Replaced the Low Oil pressure sensor (Öldruckschalter) because it was leaking oil today.  But about 1.5 inches at about the 5 o'clock position is a flat head screw in the side wall of the crank case that is nestled conveniently behind the LH horizontal Frame tube.  This screw has been leaking oil forever and it is time to get at it.

What does this screw connect to?  I cannot find it in the parts manual.  Do I need to drop the pan in order to see what it is connected to?  If it is leaking , is it loose (bad?)

To get to this screw I will probably need to move the motor up off its normal position in the frame.

I've seen that screw [leaking] being repaired at an Airheads Tech Day here. The way it was explained is that it is an oil galley plug. Its sole purpose is pro-ported to cover up a hole made when the block is drilled out to create an oil passage. Yes the Engine mounting bolt needs to be removed and by carefully raising the engine with a jack you will be able to access it. The leaker I saw was fractured and took a bit of finesse to remove. A replacement was simply sourced from a junk block and installed with a good dose of goo. You may be able to get a replacement from the Beemer bone yard or such or perhaps a well stocked industrial hardware supply. Simply a plug, no need to drop the pan. Hope that helps.

I've got one plug that has seeped since the day I got the bike .

Attempted to remove it, and apply some teflon tape on the threads, plug wouldn't move .

Don't know if the plug has a 'permanent' thread sealer or not .

But I decided not to go any further with it .

I suspect the application of some heat and an impact wrench might help.  Where is my MAP gas?  Staff...STAFFF!

Thanks for the info.  So it is the #5 part on that diagram(page 11/3)? Aha the Schlitzstopfen in my book 11 11 1 259 077 (up till 08/1980).

I will take pictures when I do this.  Teflon tape or what kind of Locktite?

Hey there are two of those plugs and guess what - they are both leaking!!

The second one is on the aft end of the case at the same level as the first one on the side of the case.  I guess that is the position of the #5 plug on the parts diagram.  They didn't have time to show the plug on side in the diagram.  Sure enough the parts book shows two plugs on all models.  

I can hardly wait.   :-/

At least that is a good thing to remember/check when one observes engine oil on the back "shelf" - it might not be a rear main seal or oil pump cover gasket leaking - it might be those oil galley plugs!  

Please do take pics as this would be a good item to add to the wiki tech pages!
