Title: R65LS Front wheel spacing...
Post by: paddyo on February 22, 2010, 08:52:21 AM
Is the front wheel on a r65ls symmetrical?  I had a tire mounted, thinking that it didn't matter which way the wheel rotated but now the rivets on the right rotor "tick" on the fork and the calipers don't line up correctly.  I'm having a hard time figuring out what's going on here.

There usually is an arrow cast into the rim on BMW bikes, to show direction of rotation, I'll have to get out to my LS, and see if this is the case on the LS rims or not .

I just checked my LS, and there are no arrows for direction of rotation cast into the rim .

What I did notice, was that there was more clearance between the rivet heads on the right side fork leg, as compared to the left side .

Don't know if it helps at all !

I had to grind a couple of mm off the end of one the caliper bolts because it was rubbing on the brake disk (rotor) bolts. I have the floating disks and the bolts and washers are higher profile than the standard rivets I think.

The caliper bolt that rubbed was on the left side.

As I had both disks stripped off the rim I might have used the rim the other way round but I am pretty sure that they are symetrical (no offset).

Mines a 79 r65 not an Ls so i dont know if there the same. The direction is marked on the rear wheel which is odd as it only goes on one way ?? no marks on the front one.My tyres are directional though,
If you tighten the nut on the spindle leaving the fork bottom bolts slack the spacer aligns that side, tighten the bottom bolt after the spindle nut. then insert a jemmy in the other side tweak the fork leg to where you want it to be then clamp it in place with the fork bottom bolts.
Should be straight forward.

"The direction is marked on the rear wheel which is odd as it only goes on one way ?"

That didn't stop me from installing a tire the wrong way once.  Doh!

I wish the front wheel had a marking but I can't find one, so I draw arrows on my brake rotors with a sharpy, to indicate direction.

I marked mine up with a magic marker before stripping but as i recall when the innertube or tubless stem is at the bottom its nearest to the alloy spoke ?? behind it if that makes sense (snowflake alloys)
