Does anyone know how to remove the steering lock barrel?
If so, could you pass on the sequence of operations please. :-?

I had to drill mine out i have a new one which i keep in my pocket and insert when i park as i buggered the coverplate when i did it.

Nice idea Monte but knowing my luck i would forget to take it out and shoot myself in the foot !!!

After a 2-week long trauma with a stuck lock (it eventually decided to unlock, pretty much on its own) I opted for (a) liquid solder in the keyhole, and (b) carrying a traditional cable lock. :-[

My R65 was carried away in the dark of the night once, with the fork locked.
When it was recovered by the police, the thieves kept the Tracy fairing, managed to get the worthless OEM battery (after a struggle, I'm sure!) and the sidecovers got lost along the way. Picked up a few scratches, too.
But there was no black market for a hot BMW in Indianapolis in those pre internet days, so it was quickly found in an alley somewhere.
But mostly I quit using my fork lock because I grew weary of picking up the bike after dumping it in the parking lot.
If you do use it, get a extra key blank with a ribbon that says "Remove Before Flight", to put in while it is locked.

I have had success (twice - two different bikes) taking the bike to a locksmith and having him pick the lock. Remove the cover tab before you take the bike to him. After the lock is out he can then re-key it to match the ignition key. Tell him it is spring loaded to return to the locked position and rotates counterclockwise to unlock. Once the lock turns about 45 degrees it will pull out.

I have ridden off with a disk lock in place (rather I tried to ride off) but I find that the steering lock prevents me from centering the bars as I mount and that reminds me to unlock the steering. Now I carry one of those plastic/rubber wrist bands that I put around the brake lever when I use the disk lock - works great as a reminder. I lock the band in the disk lock when not in use so it is handy when I lock up.
