I've been chasing a bad engine noise in the 84 runner.  I'm in the proces of checking the timing chain and it all looks OK to me.  

When I'm checking for TDC I look in the inspection hole while turning the back wheel until OT shows up and to get the mark up or down I use a screwdriver to lever the cog in the left of the hole up or down.  Thats the flywheel isn't it?  It seems to have a fair bit of play in it - is that normal? If I wiggle it with the screwdriver it seems to make a clacketty-clack sound.

I've re-set the tappets and I'm putting the front covers back on. I'll fire it up up, check the timing again

It's not normal, and I suggest you not run the engine, until it's taken care of .

The transmission has to come out, and the 'clutch carrier', two pressure plates and a clutch disc, and diaphragm spring .

Then that will get you to the five bolts that hold the flywheel assembly to the crankshaft .

Before you start to do anything you need to block the crankshaft, with a piece of allen wrench, inserted into the bolt head that holds on the alternator rotor, it needs to be long enough so it contacts the front cover on the engine, and pushes  the crankshaft back .

Failure to do so, may result in dislodging a thrust washer at the back of the crankshaft, if it falls out of place, when you tighten the bolts back up that hold the flywheel to the crankshaft, the crankshaft will be locked up, and the thrust washer will be deformed, requiring the engine to be disassembled, to replace the thrust washer .

Thanks for the tip Bob.  I figured I'd have to remove the transmission. Have you heard of the flywheel coming 'unstuck' before?
By the way, I've been riding around like this for at least a 1K so. I guess I'm lucky I stumbled across the problem. I checked the same on the 81 and its tight and doesn't move around.  Maybe I should concentrate on getting that going first.  Is this fun?
