Title: Needed Parts
Post by: Red_Hen on December 08, 2009, 03:14:14 PM
Hi Guys - I've been out of the loop and away from the bike for a couple weeks - Thanksgiving, Work, Traveling - anyway - many thanks for your comments.  What a GREAT forum!

Hi Guys,

I need to order more parts for my R65 project.  If I give Motobins the BMW part numbers from the Real OEM website, they should be able to match me up with the right parts, correct?

Here's what's on my list so far:

Throttle & Clutch cable; kit to rebuild front calipers & brand of brake pads to buy; new brake lines (planning to order from Spiegler - probably Red to go with my LS color scheme); probably Westco battery; Comfortable Handgrips? Willl the electrical system power a Stebel Air horn?   What is best brand of tires for this bike? I've got Metzlers on my other Beemrs. Back to top

I've only ordered parts from Motobins once, someone else correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you need to go to the Motobins site, and get their part number before ordering .

What calipers do you have on your LS ?

The early '82's had ATE calipers, rest came from the factory with Brembo's .

Only reason I ask, is that the ATE caliper rebuild kits don't come with the o-ring that goes between the caliper halves you have to order it separately, the Brembo kit does have them .

I've gone to EBC graphite pads, FA18 is their part number, but you have to file the back plate down to get them to fit, if you have an ATE caliper, they fit the Brembo's perfectly .

I can only compare them to OEM pads, and they work way better in wet conditions, than OEM, at least with EBC steel rotors, I don't know if stainless rotors would make a difference .

I've got them on my '84 LS, with stainless rotor upgrade from Spiegler, but the bike is a ways from getting out on the street still .

I installed a set of Spiegler lines on the LS as well, and they appear to be a high quality set .

Also the 'banjo' fittings can be adjusted with the plastic parts that come with the kit, if by chance they don't line up just quite right to the master cylinder or the splitter .

The air horn, will need to be operated by a relay .

You can use the stock wires for the horn, to operate the relay, and then add heavy wire, fuse and relay for the 'load' wiring directly from the battery .

I've been using Metzeler tires ( Me33/Me99-Lasertec) on my '81 R65, since around '87, other than the cost, I am quite satisfied with them .

A lot of members here use Michelin Macadam tires, and are equally satisfied with them as well .

Three of us here have installed a generic AGM type battery, from Staab Batteries ( part number : UB12220), for about $55 including shipping .

Don't know what kind of service life to expect, but I thought I'd give it a try .

Roger the Motobins parts numbers. They could probably track the BMW part number for you. They are very nice folks to deal with. An email with your questions will be quickly returned, I'm sure.

I have the Staab battery in both my R65s. They fit properly, no leaks or dribbles and live happily on the battery tender.

My '81 R65 runs on Bridgestone Spitfires. Excellent performance at a very competitive price. Avons came on the '83 R65... so far, so good.

Very cool - thanks!

Brembos are the calipers - thinking I can probably get pads & rebuild kit locally rather than Motobins or???

For the throttle & choke cables - the junction box looks okay - so I'm remembering there's a total of (4) cables for the throttle (2) from junction box to throttle & (2) from box to carbs.  Sound right?

Also, any good ideas for re-installing boot that comes out of rear transmission that protects dirt from getting in where the throwout rod exits out of the tranny? Seems like a tough one person operation.

You should only need 3 cables for the throttle, one from the hand grip, then 2 from the splitter to each carb .

The boot that covers the clutch throw out bearing, it's pretty east when you get the sequence right .

Put the boot on, with the clamp loose, install the clutch arm, and then the pivot bolt, once all of that is secure, then pull the boot down over transmission ;spigot', then install the clamp and tighten .

When you take this apart, remove the clamp first, and get the boot loose, otherwise, when you remove the pivot bolt, the boot will stretch, and usually tears .

I got organic brake pads from BikeBandit.com (shipping in the USA) and they got here pretty quick - they even had shoes for the rear of the LS
Title: Re: Needed Parts / (ATE' Caliper O-rings)
Post by: Mike V on December 08, 2009, 09:55:15 PM
In response to Bob's earlier post regarding the ATE' calipers and the lack of caliper o-rings included in the rebuild sets...I've put together a little info sheet and synopsis if anyone may find it useful. Was supposed to make it in the Airmail publication but haven't seen it yet.  I still have plenty of these o-rings on hand if anyone is in need just let me know and I'll get some out to you free of charge.
