Title: Wider rear wheel
Post by: steve_wicks on November 28, 2009, 12:49:06 PM
I'm sure this question has been asked, but I cant find anything ....

Is it possible to fit a larger rear tyre, i.e move the wheel further away from the driveshaft?

Yes. Paris Dakar enthusiasts have converted many G/S s to accomodate wider wheels. Various rear hub spacers and swing arm bending methods, along with modified rear wheel dishing, have been used. Frequent outcomes are very premature bearing failure and collapse of wheel. I don't remember exact details, but only a modest increase in tyre/rim size can be accomodated without seriously reducing reliability of the rear end.
Good luck anyway.

Nothing to do with BMW but are you by any chance Lars Torders the well-known Swedish barman? (Haven't heard that one since at school around 1957!)

And, the R90 racing machines of yester-year had pretty wide wheel rims to carry their serious racing slicks. In that case, the rear frames were totally custom built, to the extent of a monoshock linkage with the shock extending over the gear box.

It is, I believe, possible to squeeze a 120/80 onto the R65, depending on the model of tyre (because actual widths do vary from one tyre model to another, regardless of what quoted sizes seem to imply). So careful examintion of past threads on this forum would be recomended to discover which tyres forum contributors have been succesful with. I currently run a 110/90 Bridgestone, with a little room to spare.

Constellation, yes, I chose that nickname in deference to my distant Nordic ancestory and have used it since the early days of the steam powered inter-web. Though, one or two others have copied it  >:(  .
