Title: Low handlerbars
Post by: GrimReaper on November 16, 2009, 02:29:10 PM
I looking for a low handle bars for a 87 R65 mono.Lowest possible :)(drag bars or clubmam or at least low euro)The ones sell by Caferace.com are 7/8 inches and as far as i know BMW OEM are 22mm wich makes slightly difference. Is it so hard to fit the controls to the 7/8 and is it a place i can buy 22mm low ones
  Thanks

If my conversion math is correct, 22 mm is 0.866 inch. 7/8's inch is 0.875 inch. The 7/8 inch bars are only 0.009 inch larger than the 22 mm.

Some peeps say the difference in bar diameter can/will crack the BMW perch mounts. Some peeps also believe in global warming. ;)

Borrow a 7/8's bar from someone and see if you can safely secure the BMW bits without a concern.

I can tell you from first hand experience that 7/8 and 22mm are not the same. Yes I know its only .2 mm difference but a new throttle perch later I know it will crack the perch casting. Not all 7/8 bars are the same size given the +/- of manufacturing, the thickness of the plating, paint, powder coating, etc. but all of them are larger than the opening in the perch. I spent hours with a grinder and belt sander trying to get the chrome off of a set of drag bars just to remove the .2mm and in the end I didn't like the way they looked. Try and find a set of clip-on bars and then you have the luxury of placing them as high or low on the fork tube as you want. I ended up with a set of Tomasselli 4-way adjustable clip-ons and they are perfect but not cheap.

I'll confirm what marcmax said.  I tried the 7/8" bars and there is no joy in Mudville.  Try Boxers By Bruce. http://www.boxerbruce.com/ He has a shop full of NOS and aftermarket bars.  If he doesn't have what you need I'll be surprised.

Something else you need to consider if going to clubman bars is the distance between the drop points from the center. The first set I tried to mount would not clear the sides of the top triple tree clamp. They could only be mounted with the corners in front of the triple tree with the bars angled down or behind the triple tree with the bars angled slightly up. Neither one was an ideal position for me. They come in about 5-6 widths that I have seen.

Regarding bar diameter:

I bought a set of replacement 'S' bars from Matt at Boxerworks.  They were not OEM, but were advertised as 22mm.

The throttle perch slid on just fine.

The clutch perch would not go on at all.

First I started with course sand paper.  I eventually switched to my angle-grinder.

It took a long time, because I didn't want to take off too much metal.
Pain in the butt is what it was.  If I hadn't already drilled holes for my heated handgrips, I might have considered exchanging them.  (Matt had OEM in stock for about $50 more...).

Some people bore out the inside of the perch.

Here is Steve Hawkins' cafe.  It looks like he used clip-ops.

These clip-ons are from Tarozzi and can be sourced form here

There is an adjustable set that might be better for you as well.

Enjoy

I guess the critical dimension will be the center-width, to clear the triple-clamp as noted above.

I bought a set like these for my Honda cafe project (http://www.pbase.com/tomfarr/cb200):

This is similar:

They look similar to the ones Steve has on his red beauty.

I have the same headlight ears and adjustable clip-ons. I don't have an 'S' fairing but I have a Piranah fairing which is a similiar shape, slightly longer over the tank and slightly lower over all. I had some issues with clearance of the master cylinder and control cables but was able to adjust the bars to get the clearance I needed. That is where the benefit of adjustable clip-ons comes in handy.

S fairing unknown.

I am about to purchase an S fairing copy form Motorworks for the R100.

But it is going to be a Christmas present so I won't know for a while.

Going to paint it orange with my brush again!

Good luck with your project Steve.

By the way - I rewired my bike using the existing loom as the basis so that all the colours still matched up with the existing wiring diagrams.

As I do not have indicators, I stripped out all the wiring associated with them as well as the accessory stuff (related).  It made up half the wiring loom!

More weight saved!

Cheers

Yes.

Remember what I said about 22mm is not always 22mm.

I think the chroming process throws in a variable that is hard to account for.
