Title: Looking to buy a R65 - a couple questions
Post by: taiak on September 28, 2009, 11:46:14 AM
Hi folks, a new member from Norway here:) I might have a possibility to buy a R65. A colleague of mine is considering to sell to his bike. This bike is an '86 and is imported to Norway from the US, and should be a California-bike originally. The seller says since it is from California, it has some emission-stuff to it, restricting the power a little bit. Could be removed though, still according to the seller. Just wondering if anyone could come up with some more details about the difference between the California-version and the "normal" US-version. Also, how is the availability of spare parts for the R65 these days?

Welcome Taiak,

To the best of my knowledge, there were no 'California Emissions' bikes made, they were all the same for the US market.

The only emissions controls on the bike, should be the 'pulse air' system, that's the metal and rubber tubing that goes from the air box, to the exhaust port on the cylinder head .

This plumbing, and the related vacuum operated valves in the air box can be removed, and the leftover holes, can be plugged easily .

The parts availability for the R65 is still pretty good, and yours being a mono-shock model, has a lot more parts compatible with the larger mono-shock bikes of that year .

The pulse air system was basically an afterburner which diddnt make the bike take off(just helped burn off any excess fuel)...i think the US spec bikes were jetted down to help meet there regs.
Welcome to the forum

Thanks for the welcome, guys. Much appreciated :)

Nothing extra to a California-bike then. The seller was talking about some emission system, but that could be this pulse-air system. I will have a closer look to check it out. Not that I worry too much about it though, just curious ;)

The pulse air system on the R65 met the US emissions standards. It didn't do anything to the performance as the entire system was "down stream" from the exhaust valve... maybe a little crackle when shutting down the throttle from higher revs. Puka puka.

Buy it, you'll be a happy camper. And welcome to our ever expanding R65 family. Got a question? We'll either answer it straight up or make up something.  ;D
