Disassembled the Brembo calipers off of the LS this morning at work .
Quite surprised to find the pistons are aluminum, and not chrome plated steel .
From the looks of the seals, I could have gotten away with just cleaning things up, but I figure I'll do it right the first time, and I won't be back in there for quite a while .

Thats what I did last time with my dual ATEs. Cleaned up the goo behind the piston. Cleaned out the goo around the square seal and bolted it all back together.
Someday I'm going to need some new pistons though or set of Brembos. ;)

I have ATE calipers on my '79. When I took them apart last year there was some corrosion on the pistons. It hadn't reached the point where the corrosion would impact performance but over time it will. Can you get new pistons for the ATE's or are they replaceable with a Brembo?

From what I've heard, the ATE pistons are not available, Motobins, a BMW parts supplier in the UK, has stainless pistons, I think the last time I looked, they were about $75US for a set of two pistons, enough to do one caliper .
I was a bit surprised, not to find any build-up of 'grunge' anywhere in the brake system, when I first broke the fittings loose, I got clean fluid, not what I was expecting .

Mine have bit of rust on em too. So I just clean them with some 400 fine and bolt em back up. I've gotten in the habit of looking down the calipers so I can see that sliver of daylight between the pad and the rotor. When it dissapears I will pull em apart and clean em again.
