Title: Luggage Rack And Hard Bags
Post by: Bob_Roller on August 07, 2009, 05:58:25 PM
Just saw these two ads in the local Craigslist ;

Not knowing a lot about saddle bags, any comments on the possible interchangeability of the mount, from an R80 to an R65 ?

The prices are dirt cheap, looks like it might be one of those deals you can't pass up .

At $60.00 for bags and rack, better grab 'em, Bob. Any decent machine and welding shop could alter the rack to fit an R65.

Looks like the cases could be renewed and then they'd shine like a diamond in a billy goat's butt. Git 'em before someone else does. Cheap.

That's pretty much what I was thinking, I can't get over there today, but tomorrow after work, I'll be out there, if they are still available .

I don't need anything that's in perfect condition, just something for a day or two trip when I'm on vacation .

Why couldn't those have popped up on craigslist Delaware? Nice find; you should snatch them up for sure. I had to go with Givi T449 as I have an aftermarket exhaust that sits too high to use oem bags.

By all means, go for them! The bags are "touring cases," purported by Bob's parts staff to be for all airheads. It's a "one size fits all," supposedly.

As for the rack, even if you can't modify it to the r65, the price is right to buy "on spec." I suspect it won't need modification, but I can't be certain. I was told that Century used to make a top-case rack for airheads that's no longer available new. The critical variable for the rack is the fit of the openings for the roughly parallelogram-shaped bulges on the inboard half of each clamshell case. From the photo, the openings look OK.

I just checked Bob's prices from Oct. 2007 for new touring cases, lockset, emblems, and case reflectors: ~$555 plus sales tax. Two new mounts (no top rack mount): ~$208, +~$5 for bolts, nuts, etc., +sales tax. (Who knows what this stuff costs now??)

So, even if the rack doesn't fit & you have to order new mounting hardware, you'd be big money ahead. Besides, you could hang the mount for a vine trellis or a montmil-style "side cover mobile."  ;D

The seller finally returned my call this afternoon, the bags and attach brackets sold yesterday for around $200 .

A bit more than I would have paid .

The racks listed for R65s were not used on any other airhead.  I bet the closest match would be a short wheel base /5 or so, but I don't know.  As others have said, the racks you saw probably could have been made to work.

The cases are the same for all the racks, as far as I know.
